I'll agree and disagree with the idea that crafting isn't that profitable anymore. I don't know what it was like back then but what I notice is that the higher level stuff isn't as profitable because that's everyone's first instinct when they get omnicrafting through Ishgard is to just craft the best gear and sell it. However a lot of lower level items are still making good money. Same with low level shuffles. One very easy to use one right now that I'm not using anymore was buying carbuncle rugs and desynthing them. You could get the rug for around 5k a piece and you had good odds with proper desynth level to get 2 jute yarn, which depending on server can turn that 5k into a potential 60+. Looking at Lich prices a single jute yarn is selling for 60k. One of my earliest starts on gil was unlocking the beast tribe from ARR to buy Aldgoat Horn and just turning it into glue, that made money hand over fist. From that point I've diversified into other markets so I have absolutely no issue giving these freebies out since they won't negatively impact me down the line.

Spend some time killing megalocrabs in La Noscea at like level 12, you one shot them and the legs are turned into crab oil which can range from 1k to 5k per depending on how supply compared to demand gets. Just run a loop for an hour watching Netflix between the spawns and one shotting them. Take it a step further and use the crab oil to make the I think hammer that's used in crafting job quests HQ, even more money out of it.
