It would be neat if the moon could references Kaguya in some way.

As someone whose two favourite Final Fantasy games are IV and IX, I'm very happy that Endwalker is going to be so full of Final Fantasy IV references. IV was my childhood Final Fantasy game that meant the most to me in my earliest formative years.

So it's so neat that Endwalker, the big Finale, is going to be full of it. There's even little nods like moon rabbits, Namingway, ect. Moon rabbits are, themselves, a "Far Eastern" reference. They should definitely have the Loporrits pounding mochi somewhere.

As a fan of Stormblood as well, though(I know, unpopular opinion), it would be nice if they could somehow sneak a 竹取物語/Princess Kaguya reference in there, somewhere, someday. If not in the expansion, which I definitely understand is not a high priority, at least somewhere post-game in the lead-up to the next expansion. Like, I propose as one of the Loporrit beast tribe quests or something like that.

It would be a great way to bring things back to older expansion and make them relevant, again. In this case, a little bit of a Stormblood nod in Endwalker/Endwalker patches. I'm a big fan of this classic Japanese tale, Kaguya is a fun character from the Touhou Project series, and Imperishable Night is one of the games I've played most. Tale of the Bamboo Cutter is one of the many great ancient Japanese references in Capcom, Studio Clover, and Hideki Kamiya's acclaimed Okami. And I've seen Studio Ghibli's take on the classic literature, かぐや姫の物語, or, "The Tale of Princess Kaguya", multiple times now. And I haven't made much time for anime the past decade, either.

And I'm not alone. Like most Ghibli Films, Tale of Princess Kaguya is extremely well beloved. So it would not exactly be an obscure reference outside of Japan. This retelling of the ancient story won multiple awards outside of Japan.

So it would be disappointing if they didn't find a way to tie in a nod to Tale of the Bamboo Cutter in Endwalker, in some way. It would be a huge missed opportunity.

Don't know Touhous Kaguya myself, but I do remember Priness Kaguya mentioned in one of the Sailor Moon movies. Where the scientist believed in her, and Luna pretended to be her. So the legend is definitely in several things.

While I would expect something, Yotsuyu's primal battle was essentially a Kaguya primal (Moon-Rabbit).

Looking back I do question why they decided to go that route as her story was not really related, but then again the bulk of Stormblood's Asian-analogs were based on classic Japanese folktales like Urashima-taro, etc.

All that said I wouldn't be surprised if there was something named Kaguya (an NPC, the starship on the moon..something)

Wanted to say thank you for the story references. The bamboo cutter looks like an amazing story and I don't remember reading it (I have, however, cut bamboo, and it is hard work with grass allergies). Shadowbringers had so many biblical types of themes that I look forward to folklore from other places. I think Polynesia/Pacific Island mythology would be cool to draw from, for example, since the culture arose from absolute masters at navigation (and we will be taking a boat and traveling to the moon at some point).

I will be looking for references to these stories now, especially when I speak with the moon rabbits!

The writers do a lot to take myths and kind of make the story stand on its own -- a story for today's time, where the mythological influences are only introduced in service of the narrative and not as shout-outs. It is all so masterful. I always love looking into references people find even though it is kind of lore-adjacent and more story related. I wish there was a story forum but I guess the lore forum is the one to use. Still not sure.
