Who exactly has shown a desire to be cruel? What this thread proves is that there's a subset of players who'd love to be cruel and whatnot if they could get away with it, that there's a subset that plays this game that likes to imagine the community is absolutely horrible and will blow things out of proportion to prove it, that there's a subset that has had very little problems after years of playing, and that there's a subset that tries to act like the horrible subsets do not exist.
That depends on the person using the label. It is a negative regardless of how you try to spin it, because it's an otherwise completely pointless statement. I also play League of Legends. Am I to be referred to as a "LoL player" in FF14, despite me playing FF14 at the time and LoL not coming up as a subject of discussion?
Why should I when I just said it's a neutral label? But I'll let you explain in what scenario, ever, this could be perceived as positive. Enlighten me.
It's pointless to try to excuse those who would send death threats as they would do it under cover of anonymity.
Thus, it's also pointless to complain to the wider community about them as if there's anything we can do about it.
The only thing we can be sure of is that, if they try to do it in game, they would be banned, if they're not already.
Alas, they love to bring up the death threats and doxxing, like we all cheered them for doing it or something. Pretty much everyone I saw condemned them tho. Yet apparently because it happened every single person who ever played the game bears responsibility. That depends on the person using the label.

It's a low hanging fruit, but it only works against those who think that everyone who plays FFXIV is now a perfect member of the community. I think most people can understand that people are still flawed beings and leave it at that. They can still say this community is good or nice or great or the best based on their subjective values and experiences even when presented with negative actions being done in the name of FFXIV.

Mortal Fist
So it's a neutral label that has no use or value and makes people shrug at why you used it at best and a negative one in any other scenario? I think they did something like that in the Third Reich, where it started off as relatively harmless label - albeit pointless, people are people - and ended up.. well we know how that evolved. Now, of course, this is an extreme that won't happen, but that doesn't mean it's not going to be used negatively, even against people that don't even come from WoW - just as a general term to imply something negative. It already is.
There are labels that have (perceived) value, such as "sprout" - new player, or "mentor" - experienced player. This isn't one of them.

Ya think?
The whole premise that it is different cause you being a jerk today should go unpunished but if you're a jerk on EA day you should get punished.
You should get punished every time you found breaking the TOS. Period.
My point was and still is that if you are breaking the TOS, you will take the consequences for your actions.
If you're so emotional and get heated you must spur toxic in public chat (since that's what was being discussed with this person iirc) you should probably either not type in chat or log off.
Kahnom never said they shouldn't get punished because it's EA they said there are clowns out there who will.Ya think?
