For what it's worth, some of the kindest people I have ever met happened to swear like sailors. I don't know why so many people in the present day act like the simple act of swearing is some horrid, unforgivable sin. Yet it is what it is with the rules as they are, I suppose.
On the other hand, I have consistently found people overly concerned with the use of tone and language to be some of the nastiest, spiteful and manipulative individuals that I have ever encountered. I've also found them to be pretty flaky and unreliable.
I think most reasonable people take a 'live and let live' approach in-game and in the real world. If they have a negative interaction with someone, they're generally not going to go out of their way to pretend like it's the worst thing ever unless it's a major overstep and persistent thing. In other words, most people aren't going to reach for the report button because they had a bad run in a dungeon.
On the other hand, there is a certain type of individual who will act on any slight - real or perceived - and rush to gleefully report someone for the slightest reason, be it differences in opinion, a single swear word, a dash of sarcasm. These people genuinely believe that anyone who doesn't think, act or talk like they do should be banned and excluded altogether.
That isn't me saying that everybody should be able to say whatever they want. Some things are certainly worthy of a ban. However, I've yet to see many businesses in the present day acknowledge that there is a sizable movement of individuals who seek to weaponise terms of service in their favour over the most pettiest of slights.
From what I've seen, the FFXIV community has a staggeringly high proportion of such individuals. Weirdly, for all the concern they express over tone and words they tend to be exceptionally vile outside of the game. Far beyond anything they criticise. Such as the numerous individuals who I have seen hunt people down outside of FFXIV in order to send them death threats and insult them over liking and disliking certain characters.
I envy those within the FFXIV community who haven't been exposed to such things. I really do.
