I understand you are not interested in PVP, but that is why they are designing it to be completely optional and restricted to certain zones. All you have to do is not do it.

    But it is coming.
I honestly don't think it has to do with that. I think for many it's the issue of balancing PvE and PvP that makes many oppose it. In all the mmo's I've tried one aspect of the game flourished while another diminished. Personally I'd be all for it but I wouldn't wan the PvE side of things to falter since I enjoy taking on large beast with a group of good friends. On the flip side I love the thought of being alone in the wilderness stalking another player as they go about their business waiting for a perfect opportunity to strike.

I really enjoy what both types of content bring to the table, but I also hope SE doesn't destroy one aspect of the game in favor of the other.

I would be in heaven if this were true.

Yeah, as it is we have like 1 small line hinting at it...it would be nice if they would confirm how skill sets will work in pvp because I do understand your fears about balancing.

They've already started balancing the game for pvp somewhat by changing casting movement rules...it seems like Yoshi is really dedicated to pvp, and I'm really hoping he can make it work.

    YES!

pvp is the funnest part of MMO's imo. it's challenging and rewarding. after years of being involved in top tier pvp, I noticed that a lot of people fear it, not so much because they might not be good at it, but because of the peer pressure to not suck. there's nothing to be afraid of, just do it, give it a shot, and ignore anyone that says "qq" "gimp" "noob" etc. those are the people more worried about what others think than you.

it's all about expanding your interests, and this game does have a huge potential for something new and epic, but it will take baby steps to get it right. if it's challenging and fun, and it inspires you to do better, then you've already won.

I'm going to have to agree FFXIV right now doesn't seem like it would work too well with "open world" PVP, though the battle arena looks like it would work well, or a specific map made for open world PVP with high leveled monsters.

Anyway, for open world PVP they should have a risk factor, where you can lose gear and such, I played a few MMORPGs with PVP like this and it was the funnest I ever had in mmorpgs. You'll only lose your gear if you kill too much, but all ur invent drops from being killed regardless etc. I see no point in PVP if there isn't a system similar to that, or atleast a ranking system(like their planning)

As for Tera's PVP, I find almost no point to participating in it... It's too gear based.

GW2 PVP looks fun and the fact it's balanced is a plus, it has WvW too

D3 pvp looks like it has the hardcore type of PVP i've been looking for again, although I really hate playing scary things lol

I don't know any other good PVP mmorpgs coming out

I think if they did a open world pvp server that would be fun, I may play on it here and there and never leave a city unless I go with a group or something lol, but if all open world pvp servers were like this that would suck.

I think SE can and will be very successful in their PvP if they spend time to make it good, nice part about pvp even though a lot of people hate it is actually does help balance out pve also if they do toy with skills, but they already mentioned having different skill sets and gear so I feel like it may be like rift in a way with a different talent tree and gear to help in pvp.

All in all, I'm pretty excited for it and if they hype it up to make me as excited for it as I am for 2.0 I will even be more excited. As someone that has PvP'd A LOT in other MMO's with it i think it would be an amazing addition in the game. There is up and downs, but it something that would have to be worked through.

I want to say I totally agree! But I also don't want a copy and paste of it lol. Don't want to say I totally agree so people don't think that!

FFXIV can use a system like when you kill to many players from a different fraction, the color of your character's name will change depending on how many players you knocked out. This way everyone will know you like to PK a lot lol.

I wonder what kind of PvP system Yoshi-P has in mind.

an obvious first step would be to create a simple open arena, nothing complicated, nothing with severe penalties for death. that gets people interested, and gives us all a chance to help with class balancing. there should be the standard "observer" area, then ofc an area where the action takes place, by stepping inside this area you become "flagged" for pvp after about 5 seconds. possibly open to all levels at the same time to give some idea about how the ranges match up. I think I'd keep the prereq for entering the active area at 30 to start.

I'm sure Yoshi and the devs have their own brilliant ideas about this. I just hope they don't dump a complicated mess into the game right off the start.

I'd stray from introducing any sort of ranking system or kill counts until post balancing, such things tend to deter newish players from participation, altho, down the line, I'd love to see a daily or weekly status page ^^ maybe along with some PC display of rank on or near the names.

There will be no open world PVP or "PKing" and PVP will always be an after thought,
It's not going to be open world, but it sure isn't going to be an afterthought- There were plans in the 2.0 doc for a large-scale pvp system where the outcome of which would open up access to or impact certain Pve content, such that people who like pvp can do it and those who don't want to don't have to, and yet these two sides of the coin can interact with each other indirectly.

Issue with pvp is it's hard to balance it alongside pve content.
It seems like they're already taking that into some consideration- for instance, conjurer/white mage is considerably more capable from a combat standpoint than WHM was in FFXI.

I'm thinking along those lines too. If that is the case it'll create an excellent reason to have both classes and jobs and releasing gear specifically for one or the other. i can see classes thriving in PvP due to their flexibility more so then classes. If this was the case SE could continue balancing jobs for group oriented content while classes get balanced towards PvP.
