Even Blue Mage has a meta rotation, though I suppose one has the option to be *unique* and ignore it, likely to the rest of the party's detriment. What you have in Blue Mage is the illusion of choice, just like in WoW, where they give you a lot of options but at the end of the day there is one better way to optimize your character.

And yes, a Blue Mage regular job would have been used exponentially used more by the general playerbase because Blue Mage -the minigame- is built off of fomo. You have 2 weeks to learn the latest spells. After that? Good luck. Everyone else will have already moved on. Then you can only use them in carnival fights (which they are running out of ideas for) or moogle events. To get rewards a huge chunk of people already own.

Gacha limited time events last longer than Blue Mage updates. We do not need to shackle another job to a system that proves just how ephemeral it is time and time again.
I never played that game , WoW and I never will so I don't know what your talking about but anyways, blue has the options to choose what spells to bring, what stance it wants to do ( heal, tank, dps) it's much better than these boring homogenized jobs xiv has and these boring rotation

I swear xiv will give me carpal tunnel syndrome pressing the same boring rotations over and over and over again

    Ok then.

So in WoW, you have talents that you can choose to get new abilities or passive upgrades. You also get to choose 1 of 4 factions to get a general covenant ability, and an ability specific to your class. The result? A meta was found immediately since some abilities were clearly better than others and anyone who did not choose the correct abilities gets excluded because up until recently changing covenants was an enormous hassle.

Classes in WoW get to choose their spec, sometimes with all 3 roles just like Blue Mage. However, for obvious reasons some specs are better than others, because their continuous stacking of abilities and passives on top of each other make it so that there is a very optimal way of doing things, or a very inefficient way. At least in WoW you get your abilities through levelling for the most part but Blue Mages have the added bonus of having to wait hours in party finder until someone takes pity on them to carry them through old EX fights for their primal spells and ones from obscure Hildibrand trials that no one ever does anymore.

Blue Mage's "options" are about as optional as WoW's broken covenant system. There is a meta. Follow it (just like how one would properly play any other class) and you do ok. Choose to not follow it, and Blue Mage is suddenly reduced to a pile of copy-pasted abilities with little to no difference in potency, with rewards most of the playerbase already has or isn't interested in.

I will gladly take being able to play whatever homogenized job that comes with a complete toolkit as opposed to something that only gives the illusion of that. There was no need to place such a high barrier to entry to Blue Mage and on top of it limit to ancient content. What I would have done? Place the spells that make up the rotation in the overworld or in story dungeons with 100% learn success rate so as to not waste people's time and to allow them to progress through the game normally. As opposed to being carried by a max level player killing things for a Blue Mage that at that point would still be stuck with Water Cannon.

Eeh as much as I agree with you regarding the illusion of choice .. Blu really doesn't need any carry to get his spells.
I finally decided to level it beyond 50 a few days ago and in one afternoon I completed all trials with parties full of BLU. At some point one party stuck together and we basically chained trials and raid boss.
So... It took me something like 5h to go from 30~ spells to all but the 3 last totem spell...

I'm not saying your wrong regarding meta or anything, but getting those spells takes hardly any time....

If Puppetmaster were ever introduced, I'd want it to be the "Monk" of the magical ranged DPS. Your automaton would have some ground target move option and would stay in that position until its cooldown is refreshed so you'd hit positionals for higher potency attacks. These would have cast times so you'd also worry about mechanics as a mage vs. melee DPS. I'm not sure how the new SMN is but maybe this could be the new "DoT" job. I haven't really thought this through but I like the idea of actually "puppeting" something and this kinda plays more to that fantasy.

Considering they gave Machinist its own Automaton (Queen), that Mammets look very similar to FFXI's automatons (which could be a good thing though, I don't think we saw them in really serious combat aside from some dungeons and Lord of Verminion) and the dev team is kinda averse to pet jobs, I'm not sure Puppetmaster would come in this game as is. They would probably prefer renaming it and giving it different abilities, but I'm not sure that will happen, if they don't already believe Machinist is this game's Puppetmaster already.

That would be neat if it happened, though!
