Is this statement supposed to explain how he lost his helmet, or explain why he is Derplander?

I'd like to think it's the latter... but it sounds like you are making this in response to the post about losing his weapon and his hat and it comes off a bit ambiguous...

hahha, the way I imagine it he is out there fighting and looks up:

"OMFG, have you guys seen that giant red thing? WTF are we gonna do?"
"dude, it's been in the sky for like a year"
