the scammer sent me a tell from a hacked account, then my game went really wonky and then got disconnected, I logged back in and they tried to cut my connection again but this time my firewall stopped them. the scam artist(s) are attacking players via /tells now be careful who you get tells from as it looks like they are ramping up there efforts to get more accounts in prep for Endwalker...

I mean, did you click on a link? Because RMT can't hack your computer, traffic lights or the Pentagon just by sending you a tell.

I'm not seeing how forcing you offline (if they can actually do that just by sending you a tell) is going to help the scammers trick their way into your account.

The scam isn't built around breaking into accounts but convincing the owners to hand over the keys.

how exactly would they hack your computer simply by sending you a tell? I am assuming you did not reply or click on a link because that would just be silly. so, how would they know your IP or anything? how do YOU know it was a hacked account?

this seems like more than a bit of alarmism.. be careful who you get tells from? how exactly do you propose to do that??? clairivoyance? maybe have your cards read? consult with a crystal ball?

I seriously doubt SE would leave such a huge security hole in the game's netcode that people could actually proxy hack you like that as it would require them to somehow be able to get your account info from simply sending you a tell and people would've weaponized something like that a LONG time ago if it was actually doable.

A top prirority when it comes to proper net security is to assume hackers will be able to read any information being sent between clients and server like an open book and not leave anything sensitive out in the open where it can be abused (Not to say XIV is exactly perfect in that regard given what some third party apps are capable of...).

It was just an awkward coincidence and naught more.
