As someone who owns a house (a fully-decorated medium), I have so many problems with this thread:

The problem you bounce back to several times is that people don't have their house decorated. For some reason, the inside of other people's houses bothers you and I can't for the life of me wonder why. You seem to be under the impression that having a house means you have to decorate it, and that's simply not true. Perhaps the owner likes the open space. Perhaps they like the plot of land it's on. Perhaps they like having a hub they can port to that isn't covered in nameplates. Their reasons don't have to make sense to you.

All you're proposing are ways to punish players who have houses.

    Read that again....

Just because a house is empty does not mean the player doesn't have enough gil to pay tax. Don't mistake an empty home for being an indication of player wealth. There is a player in my server with around 15 houses and many are empty. Some are mediums and mansions. They clearly have an incredible amount of gil to be able to purchase that many houses including some very expensive plots. On top of that they're an active player with excellent lvl 80 crafter and gatherer gear. It's likely that your proposed tax would be a laughably low amount of gil to them, even taking how many houses they own into consideration.

Your tax idea is going to hurt the wrong people. New players will be affected by this worse than anyone else. Any veterans who even semi-regularly try to make gil won't have any trouble with that fee. At best your tax would reward seniority and not legitimate use of the house.

Never mind how some people would just use RMT if they cannot or do not want to try to get the gil themselves. SE's attempt to combat RMT is partially why we got that placard timer. I don't see them introducing a different system that would encourage it.

Although, let's be real: while an empty house is in no way a certain indication of a shell fc or reseller, it is entirely possible ...

I'm against a monthly fee, though. Getting a house is stressful enough without worrying about keeping it, too.

But with your suggestion you are punishing way more people who don't abuse the system. The cure shouldn't be way worse than the symptom.

No there should be enough for all WITHOUT a ball and chain link to a constant subscription.

Stop settling for even less of the bare minimum we should expect.

Here's my current issue with the housing or lack there of. I pay the same money every month as those who have houses. The only way for me to experience/get the same content as them is the ether get lucky or leave my friends and join some random FC that has a house. Why am I paying for content that I can not use? You can't use airships you can't garden heck you can't even change the color of your chocobo. I feel like SE is taking our money and not giving us what we are paying for. They are robbing there players of content/money.

Or you can move to the new NA DC that has a lot of housing and still be able to DC travel to hang out with friends. I have a whole slew of friends who did just that. I just visited them to see their personals and all the decorating they're doing and made plans to attend a few social events there.

Balmung has long been known as the most congested server ever. You're making a choice to stay there, knowing housing is ridiculously hard to get there.

If housing wasn't a limited resource, I'd be fine with rent or some other fee. The flaw in the design is the supply, plain and simple.

My wife got very very lucky and managed to get a Large during the "no lockout for relocation" phase of the game. Back then, there was still auto-demolition. When we took a break from the game, she'd resub every 44 days (calendar reminder) - open the house, then again on Day 30 of the sub. Then resub 44 days later and repeat. It wasn't ideal, but we knew we'd be back to the game. If losing your house was simply a matter of losing the gil but they were readily available, I'd relinquish land if I was taking a break.

Isn't the subscription we are all paying already the monthly fee though? I would understand if FF14 is a free to play and need to monetize certain game features to recoup development costs but given that it's already subscription based, I don't see a valid reason as to why there should be additional costs incurred for owning a house.

Why not use a apartment? I'd sorry but the only argument of those that holds water would be the "yard" for gardening; the others seem like grasping.

Housing itself has a rather sizeable gameplay components; a completely empty home suggests that either the owner cannot afford to decorate it; or does not wish to decorate it; I think most would agree that the largest component of housing is the decoration.

I think people are bothered by empty homes because the primary activities the house is used for - the lucky duck is choosing not to do. Its like going into a dungeon roulette and your healer just immediately deciding they are just there to gpose for a hour.
