I had an idea I'd like to share with the forums, though I have no idea how well it will be received or even how viable it would be. As we know, in 2.0, there will be a Grand Company vs Grand Company vs Grand Company PvP area to compete for what I assume is PvE content(Wintergrasp from WoW comes to mind.) To me, the most important part of a MMORPG is the community, and furthermore how the content inspires and drives the community to interact and compete with one another. One thing I find lacking in MMOs anymore is said concept, too much of the genre is focused on how players interact with the content, and not know players interact with each other to experience the content. And excellent example of a system that DOES compliment the player community is the Vanarch system of TERA, which for those unfamiliar, is a system in which a player if voted in to power of a specific region for a set amount of time and has control over certain aspects in that region.
The idea I'm trying to get at is the possibility of a "Grand Company Commander" in 2.0 for the GCvGCvGC warfront. The idea is that each Grand Company will have a player elected Commander. The player voted in as Commander must first meet certain requirements however, such as a certain GC rank and be of max level. The Commander would receive a special set of gear, something along the lines of a Grand Company Commander's Regalia set. In the actual battles themselves, I think it would be interesting if the Commanders themselves had a leading hand in the flow of the battle, being able to order NPC troops to certain parts of the battlefield, ordering the construction of siege weapons/calling in reinforcements. Furthermore, I believe the Commanders could act as "boss monsters," in a sense that in the battle(and only during the battle) they would have grossly overbloated stats, bringing them to the strength of a raid boss. To circumvent said Commanders simply coming out and slaughtering the regular players, I would suggest a system in which the GC in question is being pushed back considerably enough that the Commander themselves would be allowed onto the battlefield itself.
I'm having a hard time exactly putting it all into words, but the basic idea is a player elected Commander position(temporary of course) would bring about not only a sense of pride in a players GC, but evoke that sense of community driven content that MMOs of the past had, that those of today are lacking. I'd appreciate any feedback, and would like to hear all of your opinions/ideas as well. Thank you for reading.
