My intent is a personal grading system to improve skill as a player gets higher up so they make jobs with extreme complication.. Hand holding all the time is meha at best.
It is private so no harm and it gives u a way to get better...

Beside most crown players are kind horrible with the jobs dieing to easy things lol

They have actually said in interviews/liveletters that they were considering putting a system where the player can monitor their own DPS, but they are hesitant about it.

I think the commendation system is fine. Players just aren't incentivized to use it mindfully.

The problem with having a private personal dps meter is you have nothing as a point of reference. Someone might think their X dps is just fine, but just not know that everyone else around them is doing X + X(0.7) or whatever. Same problem as back in the day when people were looking at the threat meter for gauging their own dps,and them being at the top only because the more skilled players were using their threat dumps.
A private ranking system (where you don't see anyone else's rank) helps you gauge how your performance compares to the average over time.

(And yeah I prefer ranking to letter grades. Because its more flexible and less work to have to tailor it for each job, role, and encounter. Crowdsource the performance feedback.)

Yeah, I mean I don't disagree. I think that's another reason why they are hesitant. How would you effectively put something like that in without comparing it to others? I recall Yoshi-P saying they thought of a gauge that sort of filled up, and if it stayed full you know you are doing your best dps, but it's all conceptual. I don't think we will ever see a party-wide DPS meter because it seems to go against their fundamental design philosophy of party-play.

I was just mentioning it because it is something they have considered.

It's not that I think commendations are bad, but the fact that you can't give one to someone who's left the party means that a newbie player often never gets the chance to leave one, because they may be watching the cut scene while everyone else scampers off.

Similarly, because there is an incentive to leave commendations, you have people being commended who may either be not worth it, or they were just plain unmemorable.

So, yeah, I'm ok with changes to the Commendation system, but the method suggested by the OP isn't the way to do it.
