It's not that I think commendations are bad, but the fact that you can't give one to someone who's left the party means that a newbie player often never gets the chance to leave one, because they may be watching the cut scene while everyone else scampers off.

Similarly, because there is an incentive to leave commendations, you have people being commended who may either be not worth it, or they were just plain unmemorable.

So, yeah, I'm ok with changes to the Commendation system, but the method suggested by the OP isn't the way to do it.

I mean if you can't handle playing with people who aren't robots, don't PUG.

And love the idea of the party list lingering for a bit so you can comm that person who bounced too quickly

Is it really? This game has found massive success with its current approach of making content accessible. Sooo many casual folks cite the lack of meters and performance ratings as part of the games appeal.

Rankings and performance analytics have a place in high-end content, but I guarantee putting a grading system in DF content would put more people off the game than it would draw in.

We live in an era where 'being good' isn't the core appeal of games to many people anymore; We need to accept that it's increasingly becoming a niche pursuit and thus relegate metrics to their appropriate niche, where the people who care about them can seek them out if they really want to.

It's not a discussion that ends well, but having the discussion itself isn't inherently bad. I share your opinion on this though.

Counter point, what does it hurt to have a letter grade on completed battle content? It's not like getting a low score means you didn't clear it, it just means you could do it better. What you do from there is your own choice. Furthermore, it could give content more longevity in the form of achievements and possible titles and minor cosmetic rewards.

It's not a matter of people not wanting to be good at a game. It's people not wanting to make an effort to complete a game but still want to tell people they completed it. It's a behavior bleeding over from outside games where increasing numbers of people want more of the things they're responsible for to be handled by someone or something else. RMT and scammers prey on these people.

This game has largely been built on a reputation based around not having that thing, and the developers have made it very clear that it's not what they want this game to be about for the majority of its audience. You cannot deny this games explosive commercial success among a largely casual audience. I see new players talking about the lack of meters and rating systems being a positive thing daily in my servers Novice Network. So the answer to your question would be, something like this at this point in the games lifecycle would cause a massive outcry, and likely have more of a negative impact impact on SE's bottom line than a positive one. It simply isn't within their interest to do it.

This is already present in content where effort is actually relevant. Ultimate, Savage, PoTD solo, FFLogs etc. There's even speed rankings for dungeons if you're into that.

This is happening because a lot of companies have realized that there's an optimal mix of free stuff and accessibility that draws the widest possible audience to your game and keeps them engaged. This model is very clearly working for this game. If SE stands to make more money pandering to an audience that doesn't want to work super hard, they're going to do it. Casual players outnumber us sweaty folks at the end of the day, and often have deeper wallets.

Commendations aren't just for doing the best dps or even doing the best in the dungeon. They are for adding to the enjoyment of the game. I give commends to funny people or people with cool glamours, just as much as I give it to the healer who raises people quickly or the damage dealer that always steps out of aoe.

Should we be surprised anymore at this point? The game literally told us to give commendations to players who left ’positive impressions’ to us. It can mean many things depending on each individuals.

At this point this thread is sounding really like a vague attempt to request a damage meter. SE will never agree to that.
