Half-joking aside, was it ever confirmed if the Hildy stories are canon? I've always assumed they were just for fun or were exaggerated accounts of events that actually happened.

That's not his stepmom. That's his mother. And she's rather protective of her little boy. The Mandervilles have a very boisterous way of showing their affection.
