The gauss mechanic was a failure but the idea of combining machinery with its weaponry was good, like how We don’t beg for a minstrel job since BRD is just a ranger, or how we cling to a thief job despite ninja existing idk despite MCH looking like mush I hope they do one day integrate the gunner aesthetic back. Machinery alone just isn’t that compelling enough and people treat it the same way they’ll treat SMN in EW
Sorry, I thought I'd responded to this, but I must have hit my post limit back then and failed to save it to post another day.

Personally, I think the base class -> job extension take to Gunner and Machinist would be perfect for both. With that, the gun would still be integral to MCH, too, but while level 30+ would start to go deeper into gun usage for GUN, MCH would be instead adding new devices to it -- with, say, Reassemble being a mode shift for any of many devices, but certainly starting first with the gun.

And honestly, when we first heard of the Gauss Barrel, back before HW release, I was actually hoping it'd either...
  • be a pseudo-turret, a sort of accelerator ring through which to shoot, via which you'd have your Rook for Tracer Fire that'd have particular synergies, along with more of a physical / focus target niche overall, the Bishop would be there for Wildfire (coating enemies in volatile aether) and for raw AoE, and the Gauss Barrel would be for player-driven single-target burst, cycled in when your CDs are ready or resources neatly align
  • or something which would slow your shots but generate resource towards some added manual burst/multiplier function that'd help to make up for MCH's lack of burst relative to GUN's techniques.
Basically, so long as it'd be more than empty "hit-on-CD" or "unload-during-raid-debuffs" APM, I'd have been happy, but I suspect it could have gone much further.
