    Casters and physical ranged have always been separate in my mind.

    Casters have now gone the longest without a new job.

    Post 2.0 we got:
    Melee - NIN, SAM, And now reaper
    Physical ranged - Machist, Dancer
    Healer - Astro, and now sage
    Tank - dark knight, and gunbreaker
    Caster - red mage

    Blue mage doesn’t count as you can’t use it for any modern content.

    Simply counting the jobs we have now

    4 tanks, 4 heals (including EW), 5 melee dps (including EW), 3 Range DPS and 3 Range Caster

    yeah I think if we getting new DPS, it would be range or caster that make most sense

    That's an artificial distinction. For all intents and purposes, casters and ph. ranged are all ranged jobs just with different degrees of mobility (and it looks like SMN will become almost as mobile as ph. ranged...).
    Also we need a second job that uses scouting gear. And I would personally welcome a weird hybrid job that uses scouting left side and casting right side and has a 2-phase rotation (melee and physical -> ranged magical burst with a few cast times). I know the devs like to play it safe, but that's the kind of unexpected things I personally like.

    It'll probably be a Scouting DPS and an Aiming DPS.
    On the Scouting side, there is always a melee job & there is still only one scouting job. On the Aiming side, there is always a ranged job & there is technically a ranged casting job being added in this expansion so a ranged non-casting job would seem a fairly safe bet.

    The Scouting thing feels rather arbitrary to me and I personally think one of the melee armor sets should probably be scrapped, bring it in-line with ranged armor sets, but I doubt they will, so they'll probably add another job to that group.

    I think they mean gameplay wise. Yes you want at least 1 ranged and 1 caster.
    But on the execution, there is no difference mechanically wise. There is no "Physical ranged mechanic", only "ranged mechanics"

    The line is drawn by the mobility tools, how you execute the ranged mechanic.
    And in ShB, there was no ranged mechanic that specifically required a P.Ranged to deal with it, or that it was the most optimal way.

    Correct, you explained it better than I could.
    What the devs formally endorse and how the game substantially plays are two different things. But even if we consider party composition, it makes the most sense to have 2 ranged and 2 melee dps. The number of available jobs (and the way they're balanced) should reflect that. And right now, we have 6 ranged dps and 4 (soon to be 5) melee dps.
