Having to fight and scroll is the problem we are asking to get fixed. As someone who is also against mods, I'm in 7 hunt linkshells and cw linkshells to try and foster an active hunting community with in game tools. I don't care about the spam itself. What is obnoxious is the game fighting against my intent to read and click a message while people are spreading the info.

Yes, my sounds at default and if I receive a /tell then there is a sound for that. That's not our issue, though. The issue is the chat box scrolling by itself. I don't really need a notification, I was just saying that instead of scrolling the chat box back, it should simply notify you that you've received a new message by either lighting up the tab, adding an icon to the tab.

And nope, I can full-screen chat if I want, that's not the issue either. I'm quite minimal when it comes to game UIs, and I'd rather not sacrifice 20% of my screen real estate to a chat box for the occasional scroll-back. I just want the thing to stay where it is, when I scroll back. The same behavior as:

    - Any other text chat box in any game I can think of (notify of incoming message, not auto-scroll)
    - Any messaging program (notifies you, obviously - when you're on your phone and get a text, it doesn't automatically switch focus to the messaging app and show you the text)
    - A website (will not move your scroll position from where you've chosen, for any reason at all)
    - A book (no one changes pages on me while I am reading)
    - Literally anything else in life (my chosen text tends to stay where I put it, anywhere).

NOTE: My personal problem with this is solved, via "methods". I only jumped in on this to back up OP when people questioned that the issue even exists.

Discord chat bridge, for one. Handles all your chat in Discord; no more need to worry about auto-scrolling chat boxes.

It's never really been troublesome I've found.
This is what happens, and I guess this is the issue that some people don't understand (or care about, or personally have, and that's fine too). But this is what would happen to me:

(Get a message) --> Hey, Billy, I wanted to...
(Scrolls off page due to Limsa Chat)
(I scroll back to the "Hey, Billy" message, which, yes, is a scroll instead of a flick. OK, great.)

That's how it goes sometimes. Yeah, separate chat into windows will help. Yes, a notification would help. Yes, fullscreening would help.

A toggle for "don't adjust my chat positions," would also help.

Yeah Breakbeat sums it up pretty well. It's a minor inconvenience, sure, but it's still an incredibly annoying one.

To echo another poster, I'm also in multiple hunt linkshells, one of which is extremely active on the regular, I have several active friends spread across servers which sometimes leads to active linkshell + cwls + fc chat at the same time, which becomes a disaster if I'm in a major city on top of all of that.

Not always a problem, and I've already done some shuffling of what information shows up in what chat window, but it's still enough that I'd love to just be able to turn off the scrolling entirely.

Clearly my sarcasm is lost on y'all. Of course I'm used to that and normally I'd let it go but this deserves a response.

Besides the Discord requirement (which is still a hard 'no' for many folks) that forces the user to either alt-tab (or whatever abomination the Mac users have to put up with) or have a 2nd monitor. Sadly work stole that desktop real estate so no Disney+ for me during MSQ roulette! Sure you can probably play games with overlays but may as well skip the middleman entirely at that point.

    --

I was somewhat bored today so decided to do a gut-check on my snark. Oddly enough the results were in-deterministic. Sometimes the chatbox would jump, other times it wouldn't. I couldn't figure out the pattern. I suspect custom emotes (/em blah blah blah) and shout may force a scroll while standard emotes (/dance) and say did not. Sadly, when scrolling back prevented the jumps there was no indication that there were new messages. There was no blink, no tab title highlight, not even a change in size of the thumb portion of the scrollbar. That's just asking to fall far behind in a conversation.

Then there's that whole having to fight the chat box when it insists on scrolling. Yeah, no. Crap UX is complete crap.

Emphasis mine. You're used to people 'not getting your sarcasm,' because you're not doing sarcasm right. It ain't "lost on y'all," so no, we aren't all idiots. You just didn't say anything sarcastic... which is probably what happened in the past and probably why it's happened so many times that you're 'used to that'. /shrug

Your intent might have been sarcasm, and I am sorry I didn't infer that from your non-sarcastic point-blank question about which addon to use, and the fact you said 'asking for a friend' (which, further, means you want to know yourself). The words you typed aren't sarcastic in any sense of the term, so it would have been quite a leap to label anything you said as sarcasm.

When people say 'asking for a friend', they actually mean 'asking for themselves' but are embarrassed or hesitant to say so. That's how the whole 'asking for a friend' thing works. You don't say 'asking for a friend' when you want to be sarcastic; that's not sarcasm. You say 'asking for a friend' when you really want to know, but you don't want others to know you want to know. It would be labeled as a subterfuge if anything.

"Hey bro, after you workout and lift for an hour, does Oil of Olay really help your skin stay soft and oh-so-smooth? Asking for a friend."
That's not sarcasm. That's a person embarrassed to admit they want to use Oil of Olay on their buffed-out muscles, and using subterfuge to obtain the information they seek.

OK, I've digressed enough, I think. Point is I resent the inference that I'm 'too dim to get your wit' and the patronizing manner in which you said it. ("Oh, well I normally wouldn't bother to respond, but I'll do so now just to set this person straight..."). That's kinda rude when you clearly don't have a grasp on sarcasm yourself.

    /sigh

My suggestion wasn't meant to declare the end-all-be-all of chat mods. There are others. In fact, the more I search, the more I find. I only suggested DB because A) it's what I use, and B) it's very, very simple to get used to if you already have Discord open, or you use it regularly, etc.

    - If you actually still really want to know ("asking for a friend") then seek out and use one of the other chat addons that will stop the auto-scroll.
    - If you don't really want to know, and just want to practice sarcasm, reply with something sarcastic like:

"Yeah, Billy, I've fallen in love with your advice so deeply I'm divesting myself of all possessions, except my computer, and dedicating my life to exploring the world of chat addons."
