The Steam Deck, Legacy Users and Support

    Hello,

I appreciate this thread might be a little 'early' but it was something that came to mind this week.

I plan to purchase a Steam Deck, and have one on pre-order, and one of the reasons for that is to play Final Fantasy XIV portable, obviously! I've been playing the game since 1.0, and I love it!

That being said, I had a thought. With the recent changes (2019 I believe) to 'Windows PC' Service Accounts (on MogStation) being unable to log into the Steam Launcher of FFXIV, it seems that there is no way for me to play Final Fantasy XIV on a Steam Deck unless I install Windows on it? Is that true?

Keep in mind, that back when I purchased my PC service account for 1.0, and used it for ARR, there was no Steam version of the game.

Do you plan to split out the Service Account on the Mog Station to support Windows PC code registrations as well as Steam Code registrations? I feel like this would be the 'easiest' (I know nothing in game development is easy) solution to allowing Windows users to play on a Steam Deck, I would be more than happy to buy an additional complete edition of Final Fantasy XIV on Steam if it allowed myself access to playing on the Steam Deck.

    Many Thanks

From what I have seen before, Steam and PC versions of the game are separate. You'd have to buy the game again for it.

I think there are people that play FFXIV on Linux. I'm not very familiar with that world, but I'm pretty sure I've seen some talk about it from time to time.

If this is possible, then FFXIV should be perfectly playable on the Steam Deck. Valve has also been saying "full library support", and FF14 isn't exactly a small title on there, so I'd be very surprised if they launch it and FF14 turns out to be impossible to play.

You might have to do something like manually copy paste the non-Steam launcher over the Steam one though, or maybe take a few extra steps, but I'd bet people will get it working and there will be youtube guides on setting it up and so forth.

    A) as the steam deck is nothing more than a portable PC it shouldn't be an issue. You'll simply need to install the game and log in per usual. Steam has stated multiple times, THIS IS A PC USE IT AS SUCH and that if installed it will even support the Epic store etc... Again it's just a portable pc.

    B) For this reason alone I purposely started my new ff 14 career on the steam version vs the stand alone PC version

While true, not everyone will want to ditch the steam OS and install windows on it, and doing so will probably come with a battery life and performance hit, among other drawbacks.

Yeah, it's cool that you can, but "will this work without needing to take extreme workarounds" is a very valid concern/question.

Seems like a problem for steam to solve, not the ff14 devs if you ask me.

    I agree

asking SE to support a very niche audience who want to play it on the Steam deck is a little unrealistic. I mean if it works great, but I wouldnt expect SE to put resources into ensuring it works with it.

They near-certainly already have. They're advertising full library support. FF14 is in Steam's library, and isn't a niche title.

The issue the OP is wondering about is being able to login with a non-steam FF14 account.

To clarify, this is wholey a Square Enix Account issue, not a Valve Issue, not a Linux issue, this is because Square Enix do not allow PC users to login via the Steam launcher, unless they tinker with the settings of the launcher (and we don't know if that is feasible with the linux launcher). So if you're someone like me who never had the chance to make a FFXIV Steam account (because you played in 1.0 before it was out on Steam) - you're out of luck.

As it stands, playing Final Fantasy XIV on a Steam Deck, for me would need to mean one of the following:
    1) Starting from scratch with a Steam Service Account (Not Feasible)
    2) Removing the Linux Steam Launcher and Reinstalling Windows on the Steam Deck. (Feasible but is no longer the Steam Deck experience)

Ideally the resolution would be that they would allow people to apply Steam versions of FFXIV to their accounts, even if they have a PC version already registered, or by just allowing us PC users to login via the Steam Launcher.
