Server Capabilities

No server is capable of handling an infinite number of connections (it's why websites crash when too many people try connecting to them), and why DDOS is such an easy way for hackers to take down computer systems and networks. Think of a server like a highway, if too many cars try entering it at once, there's going to be a traffic jam with no end in sight.

FFXIV is currently experiencing a perfect storm of the pandemic continuing to force people to stay indoors playing games like FFXIV (as well as working from home, putting extra stress on the internet in general), with FFXIV's current expansion regarded as the best yet attracting former players back, plus the upcoming new expansion also luring new and old players alike, and WoW's current issues causing people to abandon it for FFXIV, along with well-known WoW streamers trying FFXIV and thus attracting even more new players to the game. It's the price that has to be paid for the game's enormous popularity.

And, most importantly, SE are planning to upgrade the servers (by setting up a new data centre based on Australia/Oceania), however, again the pandemic has affected their ability to do this - the worldwide chip shortage (which is why the PS5 is in such short supply) and pandemic border closures and lockdowns in Australia and Japan mean SE has been unable to make much headway in this project, meaning it probably won't be til next year at the earliest the new data centre and servers come online.

Speaking as a Balmung player who has been playing since 1.0, I'm well aquainted with server queues and to me it's nothing unusual (where getting a 'this world is currently full ~ players in queue: xx' error on login is the norm rather than the exception). Maybe try having a bit of patience and understanding.
