Maining a job you don't find the class fantasy particularly appealing?

I've been leveling a Ninja these last few days and it's by far the most fun I had in the game, the class is fast paced, it can be punishing if you make mistakes and some of its abilities look really good and I tend to quite enjoy the "Rogue" classes in RPGs, but the issue lies with the class fantasy for me, Ninjas just don't do it for me. I've even been trying to wear the Ninja job armor to see how I feel about it but... I don't know.

This is just my personal opinion, I know a lot of people love Ninjas and whatnot, but I feel a bit weird about it, I mean, looking at the Endwalker job sets I got really hyped for a lot of them but the Ninja one didn't quite hook me, and I am afraid this will be a common theme should I main this job.

So my question is: How many of you main a job where you really enjoy the gameplay but the fantasy for you was a bit "Meh"? And in that case, did that bother you or you just kinda ignored it?

hmm I watch the trailer the only thing about Ninja that felt wrong to me is the removal of the dot that seems like its ripping away the classic theme (atleast for me) for Ninja and turning it into some anime job. In a way I agree with you I think the elemental attacks should be scroll pull outs not hand signs, that said I'm happy that summoner job fantasy will be there for me I quit a long time ago because of that I'm glad after 4 expansions they finally listened.

As a mage fan I am both happy and angry about rdm I don't think it should get to aoe the flare/holy or even get foul at all... Those are suppose to be signatures for whm/blm but at the same time I'm meha w/e

blm idk how I feel about it I've always called that job the Cooldown job not a mage (since almost every ability it has is a cd)

the rest idk how i feel about but for the most part the only things im angry with is how Sch is ripped off/ ast doesnt have back the old card system (best card system) and ninja losing the only poison (dot) they have that is what made the weebyness bearable was it still had theif style movies/assassin type with poison now I dont think I will ever look at it.

You need to decide if this is true:

    Or if this is true:

Because, literally, they are mutually exclusive. Either a Ninja really is 'doing it for you' and you have had "the most fun [you've] had in this game", or it isn't. You need to be honest with yourself and forget what your friends or siblings might say, forget what your favorite streamer might play, forget about the article or Reddit thread you read that said Ninjas are the best thing since sliced bread, and just actually do what you want to do.

If the 'most fun you've had in the game' is a Ninja, as you stated, then the armor and fantasy is sufficient for you to have a really good time. Hence, you'd continue to play a Ninja.

If the armor and fantasy are bringing you down, then it can't possibly be 'the most fun you've had in the game.' Well, I mean, it could be, but if the most fun you've had is playing a character that 'doesn't do it for you,' something is amiss. IMHO you'd drop the Ninja, and try a different job. Possibly a different game if that less-than-stellar experience was the best fun you've had here.

Same as if someone insisted you eat a plate of oysters, and you didn't like them after trying them, you'd say, "no, thank you," instead of forcing them down. Well, at least I would.

Personally, I don't do entertainment I don't like. Music, movies, books, games ... if I don't like those things I don't continue to partake of them, and I don't do the 'everyone else likes this so I should too,' thing. Done and dusted with that about 30 years ago.

Either you like Ninja enough to play it, or you don't. So, you either play it or not based on your internal feelings. To be honest, my whole post here is irrelevant relative to your direct questions. You shouldn't either play or not play a Ninja based on what other people would do or have done. You do you.

They're not necessarily mutually exclusive and you shouldn't police how people have fun with things.

You can still like the gameplay of a game but hate the story or the other way around for example. In his case, if you read the OP, he loves the fast-paced gameplay but doesn't like the theming and that's what this whole thread is about.

To the OP, just to be different from others, I've made pirate/rogue NIN glams or ones where I'm wearing a knee-length dress and hide the daggers that then come out when I go into combat. Glams can help you get into a class or change things up.

As far as the question itself, I love how fast-paced bard is, but I'm not a fan of the mix of bard and archer. It's always felt weird to me and I never understood why they took that angle with it. On the opposite end of things, I LOVE the theming of astrologian but the gameplay feels a bit disjointed and erratic and I often lose track of pulling cards or I get lost in the card-pulling minigame and forget to heal.

Yeah, I've no idea where you took that gameplay and aesthetics are mutually exclusive, also using food analogy here: I think chicken soap looks disgusting, I still like the taste though, so I will eat it. I love the fast paced gameplay of Ninja, but I was never a fan of ninjas themselves, does it mean I will stop playing it? Maybe, maybe not. Opposite thing happened with DRK for me, I love the fantasy, but found the gameplay a snorefest, after weighting it I decided that I was not having fun enough and decided to try something new. So in short here, it's more about weighing which one is most important, which is why I came here to ask ways people circumvented this perceived issue.

Still trying to understand what this has to do with anything, but alright. Again, gameplay = fun, aesthetics = not appealing, it was me trying to find out a new job to play prior to Endwalker launch since the one I mained wasn't quite doing it for me, I do apologize however, I should have worded it better, because Gameplay-wise, ninja is the most fun I had in this game yet. would be more fitting.

I'll be honest, I appreciate the analytical and rather skeptical viewpoint but you skipped right through quite an important point: human behavior. Why do depressed people ask advice to others when it's clear that the only one that can help you is yourself? Validation, belonging, relatability, social interactions and of course seeking genuine advice hoping to have the energy to put those in practice among many other reasons why we do what we do.

Did I have to create this post, do I need other people's opinions to decide whether I wanna keep playing NIN or not? Not really, but I am still curious and wanted to see if others had gone through similar situations and what they decided so I could judge relating their experience to mine, it's really isn't a difficult concept to grasp.

He said the gameplay was awesome, the class identity/fantasy awful.
That's not at all mutually exclusive.

I enjoy the Machinist, but the class fantasy isn't my thing. I'd much rather the job used bow or xbow.
I'd like NIN if they went with the rogue/pirate fantasy. Ninja is just too "One Piece" for my taste.

And this is coming from a JP person.

This may be due to me being an ex-WoW player and a heavy RPer, but I have the mindset of a single character having a specialization, and I make a character out of it. Ferra's the striker so I intended her to be almost exclusively MNK. I have a Viera spellcaster and I made her character based on her being an arcane saleswoman, dabbling in spells and arcane items.

It makes it easier for me to get into a job I normally wouldn't play. Naturally this isn't for a lot of people because you're intended to have the one character do all the jobs and each new character makes you replay MSQ.

Otherwise, yeah, it is sometimes tricky to get into the fantasy of a character if they're doing a job they normally wouldn't do, or goes against their character. Anyway, paramount thing is play what you enjoy!

My main gripe with Ninja in FFXIV is that its base class is Rogue. Thief is just as much of an iconic job in the FF series as Ninja.

I know I know... in FFI Thief upgrades to Ninja, but in other titles they have also both existed as separate identities, including FFXI (the other MMO) and FFVI.

I just wish the Thief/Rogue could have been a separate job.

they may have "upgraded" to ninja but why are 90 % of the weapons are just regular daggers where are all the Wakizashi's and Kunai's outside of the relics you have the upgrade be a ninja but don't provide the iconic weapons wth SE

Me also. I loved the rogue storyline until you were assigned to to learn ninja skills. It felt tacked on.
