In WoW they rush you towards the newer areas and nerf earlier content. In FFXIV they encourage you to play through everything. The end result is good I think, but boy his game feels BIG now.
I think it depends on personal preference. I’m more story focused now and no longer raid. And, I prefer to complete a whole story line rather than eager waiting for what happens next, so it doesn’t bother me to go back and do older story quest after finishing ShB at all. For content that I can’t do or it is too much of a grind, there is always YouTube.

I see that you are already 80. Will you be able to resist the temptation to continue MSQ when EW drops? I know I can’t.

    Anyone else know this feeling?
Sorta. I just started this game in July, and am level 79 at the moment. I've done all MSQ up through the last one or two at the very end of Stormblood. And that, my friend, is all I have done.

No sidequests (bar like one or two), no secondary jobs, no crafting. I havent checked out stuff like PotD, many Gold Saucer features, barely dabbled in leveling up my squadron at the Marauder's HQ, haven't worked on my mount/minion/card/music roll collections, etc., etc. I have put a small amount of work into my apartment. Nothing special, just what I could get off the vendors plus a few cool-looking items from the market board. (That's Goblin Topmast (Mist), Ward 5, Apt. 61 - drop by and chill a bit!)

I figure that if no more content ever came out, I'd have a good three or four thousand hours - at least - of stuff to keep me occupied. LOL.

All that being said, am I "ready" for Endwalker? Well, the only thing that would make me feel otherwise is if I still had MSQ outstanding when it releases. As long as I finish the MSQ, I will drop whatever secondary stuff I am working on when Endwalker goes live, and work the new MSQ. When I've completed the new MSQ up to whatever point at which they naturally stop, then I'll go back to pets/mounts/cards/whatever and checking out other game features.

    ...

I'd like to point out that although I might feel 'unprepared' for huge new blocks of content from time to time, IMHO one should never feel 'behind' others in this game (or any MMO) unless one happens to be in a cutting edge / hardcore group that has schedules and quotas and such. Aside from that, it's futile to worry about being 'behind' someone else, because one will always be behind someone else, and at the same time, one will also be perpetually ahead of other people. There is no race. Back in WoW I saw folks lose their ever-loving minds over how far 'behind' they were; behind whom? Behind the average? Behind a concept? Behind "them"?

Behind doesn't sound like a proper word, now. You're welcome =P

I think it is better to do the game at your own pace. Enjoy it and don't rush things. You only get to experience the story for the first time once in your life and that would be better if done right rather than rushed.

Go with the MSQ as the first priority so you can reach EW. Everything else (like the Omega you are mentioning) can be done after you have caught up (except for Crystal Tower if you havent dont that yet, that is required for Shadowbringers. The MSQ up to 5.56 can be completed well before EW comes out on early access. Again, consider your pacing and no need to rush.

Good luck and get cracking in the MSQ.

Ah yes, I was waiting for the 2021 buzzword to pop up and didn't get disappointed.

You won't miss out on anything, unless you dig large crowds of people surrounding questgivers, and even then, just a bit, later there will be another seasonal event.
No worries, you will get your Shibuya Scramble experience.

i mean... is there even a reason to reach the end that fast? there isnt much to do there anyway. you can do most stuff before the end.

exactly! some players go rush like crazy to finish game then after complain about "lack of content". Its much better play at your own pace.

I've needed to catch up on things for several years in this game. I've been meaning to level up a couple crafters for example, I need to organize my inventories, etc... I don't even have my blue mage leveled. I just see it as things I can get to one day; stuff to potentially do when done or tired of current content. I'd say it's usually best to get through the story, and be caught up however (gear wise, roulettes, etc.), but there is no real rush on anything else really, well maybe savage if someone is into that kind of thing.

The less you worry about reaching the tippy-top end of MSQ so that you can be there Day 1 of Endwalker playing with "everyone" else - let's face it, the feeling of having caught up and excitedly rushing about in the new content with more people than there will be in the rest is unique - the better the journey will be. I feel you. I am in Stormblood as well, but every few days I fall back and do something new. I check out my many alternate jobs and bring them to 60. I prepare my GC squadrons for running Heavensward content for DD jobs I'd rather not want to sit in queue for. I checked out the Gold Saucer very recently and love it. I've brought my partner into the game and cannot wait for when he reaches the end of ARR so that I can show him things like POTD and other jobs that he scoffs at.

There's so much that, while it won't disappear, is tempting to go to for a change of pace. Whenever I start to feel like the MSQ is terrible... I take a break from it, and come back to find it's not that bad TBH.

~2 months is a while, trust me. It's not worth ruining your perception of your game and burning out just to be in current ShB sooner. There's no prize for that. Do what you want, do what you feel like, and even stop playing for a bit if needed. The things you want to do matter more than things you "have to"; it's a game, after all! You'll get there.

Well things that you don't have to do like Coil's of Bahamut the writer told you to do for the Endwalker story.
Atm unsynced makes it pretty easy to do that type of stuff if you can't find a party but after they changed that getting that stuff done when Endwalker is out is gonna be so much harder.
