I think it really comes down to whether you like the gameplay or not. I joined FFXIV back when everyone seemed to be running Coils, but before WoD released. While others were getting frustrated with Coils progress, happiness was the only emotion I felt whenever I thought about the amount of content ahead of me. That's because I was thoroughly enjoying what I was playing through, and so having a plethora of it left to consume was bliss.

The great thing about FFXIV is that all the enjoyable content isn't hidden away at the end, not unless you're only interested in a very specific part of the game. Being in expansion A is just as good as being in expansion B or C. Unless they just don't care about the MSQ, anyone who is skipping through most of the content just to play an upcoming expansion has really done themselves a disservice. It's like throwing out 80% of a fresh pizza so you could focus on enjoying the remaining slices - it was all the same pizza.. why would you do that?

I think it depends on personal preference. I’m more story focused now and no longer raid. And, I prefer to complete a whole story line rather than eager waiting for what happens next, so it doesn’t bother me to go back and do older story quest after finishing ShB at all. For content that I can’t do or it is too much of a grind, there is always YouTube.

I see that you are already 80. Will you be able to resist the temptation to continue MSQ when EW drops? I know I can’t.

It IS big! Like you got at, that's both a blessing and a curse. I returned a month or so ago after being gone since the end of 5.0 and had quite a bit to catch up on; not simply the MSQ. So much so, that once I got my main DoW, DoH, and DoL to 90 and finished the MSQ, I wasn't quite sure where to go from there. There's simply so much to do that one can get analysis paralysis pretty easily. I've decided to just chill, do whatever I feel like doing at the time, and stock up on crafting materials like crystals and manuals. I normally avoid raiding like the plague, but decided to see if I could get through Alexander this weekend and actually enjoyed it. Once I get that done I may actually look into Omega and Eden...but maybe not. It doesn't really matter as long as I'm having fun.

All this to say, enjoy doing what you want to do at any given moment. If you're having some FOMO, which is understandable, prioritize the MSQ and getting a single DoW/DoM to 80. Depending on how you play, you might have enough time. If you don't, at least you'll be closer to EW content and may be able to get there after the First Two Week Rush is over. I totally get wanting to be there for the opening of an expansion, but I'll tell you, after experiencing it many times over multiple games, I've realized it isn't worth it in the long run. Quest givers are hard to target, quest mobs get blown away before you can get to them, and all that jazz. Personally, I'm going to sit back, relax, and gather/craft for the first week to let the initial wave dissipate into the world.

Do the content you want to do, play the game the way you want to play, if you want to do a hard push to be ready for EW, you can probably do it. If that's not what you want to do, then don't. It'll be there when you're ready.

YoshiP explained it the best, like this: think of FFXIV as an ongoing TV series. ARR is season 1, HW is season 2, SB season 3, ShB season 4 and Endwalker season 5. When shows are being made they are (generally) being made that you start at season 1 episode 1 and watch until you're caught up. You can skip to season 4, of course, but you'll be missing what happened in previous seasons.

    Good luck either way.
Tbh in and of itself isnt an issue its more of fear of spoils and fights being ruined for u by the time u get to them due to how ppl are

That's fair. That perspective isn't one I think about actively.

    Anyone else know this feeling?
Sorta. I just started this game in July, and am level 79 at the moment. I've done all MSQ up through the last one or two at the very end of Stormblood. And that, my friend, is all I have done.

No sidequests (bar like one or two), no secondary jobs, no crafting. I havent checked out stuff like PotD, many Gold Saucer features, barely dabbled in leveling up my squadron at the Marauder's HQ, haven't worked on my mount/minion/card/music roll collections, etc., etc. I have put a small amount of work into my apartment. Nothing special, just what I could get off the vendors plus a few cool-looking items from the market board. (That's Goblin Topmast (Mist), Ward 5, Apt. 61 - drop by and chill a bit!)

I figure that if no more content ever came out, I'd have a good three or four thousand hours - at least - of stuff to keep me occupied. LOL.

All that being said, am I "ready" for Endwalker? Well, the only thing that would make me feel otherwise is if I still had MSQ outstanding when it releases. As long as I finish the MSQ, I will drop whatever secondary stuff I am working on when Endwalker goes live, and work the new MSQ. When I've completed the new MSQ up to whatever point at which they naturally stop, then I'll go back to pets/mounts/cards/whatever and checking out other game features.

    ...

I'd like to point out that although I might feel 'unprepared' for huge new blocks of content from time to time, IMHO one should never feel 'behind' others in this game (or any MMO) unless one happens to be in a cutting edge / hardcore group that has schedules and quotas and such. Aside from that, it's futile to worry about being 'behind' someone else, because one will always be behind someone else, and at the same time, one will also be perpetually ahead of other people. There is no race. Back in WoW I saw folks lose their ever-loving minds over how far 'behind' they were; behind whom? Behind the average? Behind a concept? Behind "them"?

Behind doesn't sound like a proper word, now. You're welcome =P

I think it is better to do the game at your own pace. Enjoy it and don't rush things. You only get to experience the story for the first time once in your life and that would be better if done right rather than rushed.

Go with the MSQ as the first priority so you can reach EW. Everything else (like the Omega you are mentioning) can be done after you have caught up (except for Crystal Tower if you havent dont that yet, that is required for Shadowbringers. The MSQ up to 5.56 can be completed well before EW comes out on early access. Again, consider your pacing and no need to rush.

Good luck and get cracking in the MSQ.

i mean... is there even a reason to reach the end that fast? there isnt much to do there anyway. you can do most stuff before the end.

exactly! some players go rush like crazy to finish game then after complain about "lack of content". Its much better play at your own pace.
