A lot of people think bjd dolls and dolls in general are creepy actually.. i have a small collection of them 7 of em 5 larger ones 2 cheap small ones. Out of everyone who has seen them i would wager about half found them kind of creepy. My own family are kind of mixed about them.

It is really common for people to find dolls off putting..

not only do i find them creepy but dolls like these just look really ugly to me. no matter the effort, photography and money spent - still very hideous and very creepy to me.

Look, I'm not trying to be funny but if you're afraid of something, make it explainable why you afraid, or I don't buy it.
I think people have given their explantions why they're creeped out by dolls in general or by the Y'shtola-doll in particular in this thread already?
And for some people it might be absolutly possible that a doll jumped in their face when they were little - or was jumped in their face by some relative who thought it would be funny.

At the end of the day its irrelevant whether or not you can actually understand or accept a reason someone else gives (or doesnt give) for being creeped out or afraid by something - you not accepting/understanding their phobia doesnt make their feeling of fear or uncomfort any less real.

Porcelain dolls are beautiful and elegant.
If people keep rejecting this, the numbers of artisan will decrease more and more and someday it will only appear in museum or history books.
Sorry not sorry for being rude, but why should I care for something I dislike?
Why don't you buy 10 of them since you're so concerned :v

I hate humanoid doll, especially girly doll like that. No amount of guilt tripping will makes me want to buy it.

It's the facial structure and painting that are creepy, especially around the eyes. The Y'shtola face is especially creepy if you look at it in a close up (though that one you posted is looking similarly creepy). Honestly they look like wasted drug addicts.
just imagine that thing turning its head 180 degrees to your direction with a grin.
    nightmare fuel right there.

i’m also not really fond of clowns, or people wearing theater masks.. it’s kind of the same feeling i get from seeing dolls like these, hard to explain.

I guess you’re not afraid of anything then? Because plenty of fears are irrational or not based in bad experiences, people can just simply have them and there won’t be a rational explanation for it. This is so normal and commonly accepted that I can’t understand why you’re struggling with this concept.

I find the doll unsettling too, the first time I saw it on the launcher I found it offputting. Repeated exposure has not improved the experience, I’ll be happy once something else shows up there. And I felt that way before I read any forums, personal opinion and all that, thank you very much

.. Cause people aren't you and have different aesthetics and one persons ethereal beauty is anothers haunting piercing unearthly stare.

Just cause something has a community doesn't mean it'll change how people feel about something.

Know what I've spent a lot of money on? My motorcycle.

Giant community of people out there think my hobby is loud and obnoxious and dangerous. To them it is, to me it isn't. They're welcome to their opinion.

I used to be in the BJD community (I had to quit due to financial issues) and while I agree that the "omg dolls creepy" senteiment gets rather predictable and boring at times it doesn't bother me THAT much.
I totally get where they are coming from - most dolls look close enough to a human face that our minds register them as "humans" while at the same time we can also tell that they are NOT humans which throws you off and puts you on edge. My personal theory is that it's something primal, like we subconciously think of the dolls as humans with birth defects that likely wouldn't have survived to adulthood, thus we have an association with death, suffering and unease. Or in case of really pale ones we see them as actual corpses, which coupled with dressing them in old-timey victorian clothes can be downright disturbing or ghost-like. Just my hypothesis though.
Really, my main problem with the Y'shtola doll is that it's too "kawaii" and doesnt reflect on her stoic nature as a character. I understand that the sculptors had to keep some things in mind while designing her head so that her head would actually fit the other parts, like her eyes or hear wig. Sure, a lot of extra parts are custom made for limited dolls like her, but they still adhere to certain measurements for easier production. Regardless, I still think they could have affoded to make her a bit more stern or wise.

It is possible to appreciate the mastery of craftsmanship that goes into a product while not aligning with it in terms of taste.

In short it is okay to think something that requires tremendous amount of skill to make is still creepy. It does not detract from the hobby or the value of said hobby.
