    Sea Wolves aren't bots

Today I changed my alt's clan from a Sea Wolf to a Hellsguard and changed her name because people thought I was a bot despite that I play nothing like a bot.

I feel slightly bitter about having to do that as I put a lot of thought into that name and was following Sea Wolf naming conventions. Those who knew me well enough laughed when I translated the name to them, but sadly too many people in the wider crowd called me a bot or treated me like a bot just because my name was unpronouncable to them. Even some of my own FC members who've not met my Roe before have jokingly commented on my Roe's name looking like a bot's name, but it's gone on for so long now that it's no longer funny and I knew I was eventually going to have to invest in a name change.

I've also seen the odd Sea Wolf player on my main character in parties and often heard people say "oh great we've got a bot in the party" and I've had to correct them that they're not a bot and are using a proper Roe name.

It saddens me there's too many people who judge players just because of a name and even more if that person is a new player who's just learning their job. Because of them there is now 1 less Sea Wolf femroe because I was tired of being mistreated and jested at my expense. I'll miss her she-hulk green skin but I won't miss the abuse I endured.

With all the weird names in this game, the only way I'd assume a character was a bot based on that is if you named it Mark Zuckerberg.

SE didn't think out those names very well. They really do look like bot names. But why call someone a bot, if they talk.

They thought it out just fine. They're named using an archaic Germanic-themed word list. Like all the races are each named based on a different archaic real world language or culture.

If you take into account vowel shifts you can can even parse some of the names for their meanings without looking at the dictionary:

    Ahldskyf .... ahld=old, skyf=ship
    Rostnsthal .... rostn=rusty, sthal=steel
    Bloefhis .... bloe=blue, fhis=fish
    Rammbroes .... ramm=ram, broes=chest (via breast)

I thought it came across slightly Welsh, especially when my surname was Ubylwyrnwyn. xD

Despite this the problem is too many people are ignorant of the lore and judge based on what they've known, and having known a lot of RMT bot names using random characters they immediately assume someone sporting a name that's difficult to pronounce must be a bot or an RMT. It's made playing my roe very unpleasant for me since I wanted an official roe name and when I came across that one and what it translated as I thought it was very amusing only to then be put down by randoms who don't know any better, and those randoms outnumbered the players who knew what it meant.

You are missing the point. The game is played by modern people that interact with every day internet. When you think you are being too smart/smug it will probably backfire. Certain words from old languages do not mean the same. I bet if you showed those letter combinations to most people outside of MMOs they would probably think its a captcha.

We're not talking about people outside of MMOs. We're talking about people inside MMOs. Specifically this MMO. Which introduces you fairly early to at least a few characters with consonant clusters in their names that people aren't used to seeing on a daily basis. It's a fantastical setting. If a player playing this fantastical game is put off by encountering some fantastical names, that's not on the devs.

I had a long post. But you will never understand. Keep playing with names people associate with bots. It sure made the OP happy.

Anyone who's remotely familiar with the Sea Wolf naming conventions won't mistake one for a bot because awkward as they sound there's still actual structure to their names.

I've personally never seen anyone make dumb remarks like what the TC experienced so I'm disinclined to think it's a common thing.

It's not hard to learn to recognise the Sea Wolf names as names. We encounter enough NPCs over the course of the story that people should be able to see the sort of names they have, even if you don't fully understand the logic behind them, so it's not like player names are the only ones in that format.

They're still pronouncable even if you have to take a moment to figure out the syllables.

Of course, some do look more overwhelming than others.
