This is possible to do. Sprouts can hide their plant icon. But that's doesn't mean they are not sprouts anymore. If they lack skills it's their problem. An Icon, either Plant or Burger King Crown, doesn't mean you are skilled or unskilled. This entirely depends on the player.
Same goes for you. Trying to hide that you are a Sprouts will only make other player angrier when you fail and less patient.
Still. Shironeko was almost completely right. Beside the fact that you can hide a sprouts icon, you don't choose to not BE one. If you go over an other game you will be a sprouts there because you have no idea of how the game works. For the Mentor Side, I can only agree with Shironeko again, you choose that. If you don't want to help sprouts, don't become a Mentor.

While a sprout/returner can hide their icon, a player has to choose to become a mentor after earning a specific amount of commendations, clears, levels, etc.. A mentor has to also accept a prompt that states that mentors are expected to be an "exemplar" of player etiquette, among other things. This means that a mentor has chosen to be held at a higher standard. A sprout/returner is not comparable here. For that matter, a mentor's crown is back on when they do mentor roulette: where they get extremes. So when so many mentors are acting contrary to the expectations of being a mentor, it makes sense that that reflects badly on all mentors, as it shouldn't be so common. This is why without constant oversight by SE this system will never work, in my opinion. Having a desirable award tied to mentor roulette clears, only exacerbates the issue, as you get "mentors" like this thread describes.

Thank you! This place makes me feel like I'm taking crazy pills when people start in with things like "mentors shouldn't be held to higher standards", "they're just players trying to enjoy their time", "it's not their job to help people". You can find some replies along those lines in this very thread and they almost always get tossed out in discussions about mentors. While a sprout/returner can hide their icon, a player has to choose to become a mentor after earning a specific amount of commendations, clears, levels, etc.. If someone isn't in the mood to be in mentor-mode, turn off the crown and don't queue for the mentor roulette. The current system is a mess and really should be reworked with a new icon and removing all rewards.
I am far from a mentor, and I did not even have time to participate in many troubles in this game, but I certainly use DC It is not professional for a person who has become a mentor. Regardless of the fact that it is impossible to close, or how difficult the test fell out. I was more fortunate in this regard: in two months of the game, I did not meet a single toxic or unscrupulous Mentor. Even when I got into the extreme of Sephiroth, all the mentors, and there were 3 of them, held out to the last. We were unable to close within the given time, but none of them left the group.I will say more, the help on mechanics that they provided, more and more propelled us to victory.I am writing all this only to thank and support those who were with us and all the conscientious mentors.

If that is how you do it, then do it. But you cannot force people to make a choice when they don't know such a choice exist.
You are not them, and they aren't you. Therefore, if you think they choose to be clueless so be it, but that's not necessary true, and it's more often the opposite. That's the way of thinking of a machine (0 or 1 ya know ?). I won't even try to make you understand a principle you don't want to ear about because it's not in your logical sense. So the discussion with you is closed.
Moving on.
SturmChurro, this was exactly what I talked about, thank you for bringing this up.
