I want to experience the story.

Hello, I am a returning player to ffxiv, im just starting Stormblood so I know I have a long ways to go.

Problem is i don't really remember much of anything that's going on. I did not pay much attention to the story in the past but I want to change that going forward.

So my question is what would be the best way to "re-experience" the ARR and HW story. Should I go through each quest in the Unending Journey? Should I watch YouTube videos? What do you think?

    Thanks

It's up to you and there are many ways.
    1. Unlock New Game+ at Vesper Bay in Western Thanalan. It allows you to go through the story again in chapters.
    2. Read the quest history. Open your journal and click Complete, then read the summary for every single quest under every tab and selection. This could get very tedious though.
    3. Watch the cutscenes again in The Unending Journey.
    4. Watch it on YouTube.

In other news, there is no technical debt from 1.0.
"We don't have ... a technological issue that was carried over from 1.0, because ARR was meant to kind of discard what we had from 1.0 and rebuild it from the engine."

If you don't want to go through the trouble of leveling a whole new character the game's added a New Game+ option for you to go back in the MSQ without losing any character progress.
Just go to Western Thanalan to unlock it!

Yep, all you need is to have beaten ARR.

Go to YouTube and find "Comicstorian" and look for his FFXIV recap videos.

If you are going the NG+ route, make sure to also go through the Crystal Tower arc – ideally after completing the main game of ARR but before completing the post-credits storyline. It is essentially part of the MSQ at this point and is required before you can complete post-ARR. (If you haven't done it "for real" yet, you'll eventually hit a second point where you can't progress until you've done it, but it's better to have done it sooner.)

Also, optional but still recommended if you want to go fully deep on the story, whether you need NG+ or play them for the first time: the Binding Coil at level 50 (needs a PF group to unsynch it for easy story-ing), Alexander and the Warring Triad at level 60, and once you get to the end of Stormblood, Omega at level 70. To varying degrees they are referenced back later in the main story and it is helpful to be familiar with them.

And once you get to post-credits Shadowbringers there is a cluster of stories which aren't currently relevant to further MSQ but are still worth playing, perhaps best while still in the mindset of that game's MSQ. The Eden raids are intended to take place alongside MSQ and continue a major character's story, and completing the four "role quests" introduces a fifth storyline tying together those and some other quests, and may expand in future.

    ---

On a different track, something to consider is that if you're going to NG+ from the beginning of the game and you're not particularly attached to (or own irreplacable items on) your current character, you can perhaps just start over for real. If you're not happy with your current character design or name, it's a chance to change that for free.
