America is typically only used to refer to the USA, whereas "The Americas" is used to refer to the North, South, and Central American landmass, and a select few islands off the coasts. It's like how you wouldn't call Africa the "Central African Republic" despite there being a country within Africa called the "Central African Republic," and the names being similar to each other as they contain the word "Africa" in them.

It really isn't hard to Google. Just because it's all a giant landmass does not mean everyone there recognizes themselves as American lmao.

Using your logic there is no Europe since it is all different countries, there is no Asia, as again it is made up of different countries there is now country Oceania as again it is all different countries, same with Africa. Reading comprehension (I know its hard for a lot of people) will tell you they are not listing separate countries but regions.
