Fullscreen Issue

Hopefully this is the right place to post this... So, I've been playing for about a month now and every once in a while I'll come up with a problem that involves switching between my home-screen and the game--three, four times so far I believe it's happened.

The problem is that, when I switch screens, whether by pressing windows or alt tabbing out of the game, every once in a while my entire screen turns black and I quite literally can't do anything to solve it (so far), so I have to just shut off the breaker to my computer and restart. I can hear sounds fine and I can hear my clicks being active still, but I can't see anything.

It's nothing huge, but I was just curious if anyone knew anything more detailed about it--I saw a reddit post that was from a couple years ago who had the same problem but no one was able to answer it. Thanks.

I’d recommend pushing Ctrl + Alt + Delete and bring up task manager. From there go to “options” and select “Always on Top”. Whenever it does this in the future you should force close the application. Continuing to do what you are doing will break your PC.

Are you running the game in Full-Screen mode or Windowed (Borderless/Full-Screen) mode? (In-game graphic settings). If you just have full-screen it may be worth trying Windowed (Borderless/Full-Screen) as this should allow the game window to remain open and running when you have other elements open (i.e. start menu, web browser). If I recall alt-tabbing an application in full-screen mode effectively tries to minimize it, which some games will not like. Overall it sounds like a graphics driver/directx glitch when it goes to black permanently, though I had similar issues with Radeon cards running in Freesync mode with both FFXIV and other games previously (switched to Nvidia and not had issue, but I do have it limited to 60Hz refresh rate).

I've never had this happen to me before in any game, which is why I was a bit confused. The current card I have is the RTX 2070 Super, with a 165hz Nvidia monitor. Thanks again.

Yeah, I never like to forcefully shut down my computer--hopefully the task manager will pop up this time if/whenever I black-screen again, as I couldn't get it to show up (visually) before no matter what I did.

In regards to your concern, it would be best to check your displaying settings in game changing between full screen, windowed and borderless windows. Fullscreen is not advised to use if you have multiple monitors and move the window over from one screen to another. It is recommended to run in Windowed mode to be able to do without issue. Please test this to see if that may help.

If the issue still persists, please provide a Final Fantasy XIV system report by going to the 'Config' option on the Final Fantasy XIV launcher and to the right of 'System Information' click on 'Display' then pasting the details into the reply back to this post.

This is how FULLSCREEN MODE functions. It takes up the entire screen and you can't easily transition between the application and other apps or monitors. Tabbing in an nd out will cause a black screen pause as the screen relinquishes your software and switches over to what ever else you're trying to get to.
I hate full screen mode. I'm currently troubleshooting why the game is forcing me into it. I always keep it on borderless windowed, and then one day i log in and its set to fullscreen, and its now every single time i log in i have to switch i tback over to borderless windowed. Which is getting obnoxious. Of course Square support is kind of useless. Just patronizingly telling me to make sure i've set it to borderless NOT fullscreen... which i had already informed them I had done and know how to do this. The only other avenue they gave me is to completely reinstall the game w hich makes me feel ikcy... that always causes problems. I even tried setting it to Windowed mode. It doesnt matter. The next time i log in it'll be back on Fullscreen. Sadly this forum post wasn't helpful to me but it was the first to pop up in my initial search and thought I might as well chime in on the topic.
