You start it at level 30! no need to relevel all the way.
This is similar to how jobs are picked up later on - DRK, MCH, and AST start at 30 (require lvl 50 and entrance into Ishgard) RDM and SAM start at 50 (and require 60 i think) and DNC and GNB start at 60 (and require 70… i think)
The experience of the job is shared with the class.
New jobs released in expansions stopped having classes, so when you unlock them they already have a soul crystal and it equips automatically with the weapon.
A Realm Reborn jobs
====
Class/job requirement: the combat class that you wish to upgrade to a job.
Level requirement: 30
Starting level: n/a. ARR jobs do not have experience or real levels. They use the base class's experience and level.
MSQ requirement: Sylph Management
Heavensward jobs
====
Class/job requirement: any combat class or job
Level requirement: 50
Starting level: 30
MSQ requirement: advanced to the point of being able to enter the HW city
Stormblood jobs
====
Class/job requirement: any combat class or job
Level requirement: 50
Starting level: 50
MSQ requirement: none (see below)
Shadowbringers jobs
====
Class/job requirement: any combat class or job
Level requirement: 60
Starting level: 60
MSQ requirement: none (see below)
Endwalker jobs
====
Class/job requirement: any combat class or job
Level requirement: 70
Starting level: 70
MSQ requirement: none (see below)
Note about expansion jobs' MSQ requirements: SB, ShB, and EW job quests do not themselves have MSQ requirements; however, practically speaking, players who start in Limsa Lominsa will only be able to unlock Dancer and Sage, while Ul'dah and Gridania players will only be able to unlock Red Mage, Samurai, Gunbreaker, and Reaper because travel between Vyllbrand and Aldenard is locked behind the Lv15 MSQ Envoy quests. Players who want to unlock jobs on the opposite land mass will need to progress the MSQ at least to the Envoy quests so that they can physically reach the other job unlock NPCs. This only really affects the unusual case where someone starts a new character and immediately purchases a job boost but not a story skip.

they changed it with later jobs so its confusing
No, it's less confusing. ARR jobs are confusing because the arbitrary requirement to have Sylph Management complete is incompatible with contemporary leveling speed to MSQ speed ratio (seriously, there's no good reason to require this). HW jobs are confusing because they require Lv50 to unlock but you get sent back down to Lv30 when you unlock them, which is incompatible with the goal of unlocking a HW job and then playing it for the rest of the story.
The modern jobs allow you to unlock them and then immediately begin playing them in the main story without having to take time away from the story to catch up, unless you're playing a job at release and you are the cap level for the previous expansion. The price of playing a new job for the rest of the MSQ is starting 10 levels behind. This doesn't affect players who are reaching the unlock level for the first time. They will be able to unlock the job and then immediately continue their MSQ with it.
As I understand it, the reason for that change was that it was meant to be a way of attempting to roadblock RMT bots from gaining Jobs and thus running later content - how effective this has been however is a very good question. Given at the same time SE removed a second class needing to be levelled to 15 to unlock a Job (which was extra busywork for bots), it was probably to compensate for that.
Wait. Can't we just take a ship from Vesper Bay?Note about expansion jobs' MSQ requirements: SB, ShB, and EW job quests do not themselves have MSQ requirements; however, practically speaking, players who start in Limsa Lominsa will only be able to unlock Dancer and Sage, while Ul'dah and Gridania players will only be able to unlock Red Mage, Samurai, Gunbreaker, and Reaper because travel between Vyllbrand and Aldenard is locked behind the Lv15 MSQ Envoy quests. No means of travel between Vyllbrand and Aldenard will work until the Lv15 Envoy quests. The ferrymen will turn you away. But as I said, the people affected by this in reality are quite few. Only people who buy job skips will be a high enough level to unlock expansion jobs without progressing the MSQ that far.
