And to elaborate, I understand and support the Aether lockdown. The global chip shortage is real and crippling many industries (as well as the pandemic and travel restrictions).

My somewhat pessimistic view is that we won’t see new servers in the NA datacenters before we reach capacity limits that would have all servers locked.

And my question is, in that not so unlikely hypothetical situation, what does SE do?

They will most likely start with forced daily logouts like they had in Stormblood. They kicked everyone off the game at like noon and then opened it back up so people could log back in. Annoying, sure. But it worked wonders kicking people out that were using ways to get around AFK timers.

If it gets bad enough, I can see them delaying OCE servers and using that hardware for NA. Presumably, they have one datacenter for OCE so that could add another to NA. If it's two, they can add one to NA and one to EU (which is also suffering if I remember). This honestly is probably their best bet. We don't have any idea of when the chip shortage will be over and EW is going to cripple the existing servers if the load isn't spread.

im actually seeing a lot of this, and i am curious as to why the US playerbase seems to have this idea that OCE shouldnt have their own servers. Or is this a case of its fine for others to have bad lag and a poor gameplay just not them?

So I ask : why is it do you think SE would hand them over to you?

Big SE might see the $$$$$. The restriction to travel to Australia and New Zealand would be the perfect excuse to use to deflect any criticism.

And as for restrictions, those are about to be thrown out within four weeks or less. People do come and go from Aust now as it is, so you are wrong. The travel restrictions are due to be lifted completely very shortly..I am also told that the OCE servers have been in discussion long before Fanfest.

I am also told that the hardware may already be in place. So no, OCE servers that have been in planning stages for years wont be handed over to Americans.

I said travel TO Australia and New Zealand. Putting the Oceanic Servers in Japan wouldn't solve anything. Just like the NA servers are in California the Oceanic servers will most likely be in Australia and travel to Australia and New Zealand is heavily restricted.

I think we are getting our lines crossed. I'm talking about Travel from Japan to the Trans-Tasman region(Aus and New Zealand). I know that Japan are trying to lift international travel in Oct with them lifting that region from lvl 3 to lvl 2 but that still is just essential travel. For the OCE crowd i hope that winter doesn't cause covid to spike back up in either place or they might be looking post 6.1 into 6.2 for SE to get engineers down there.

I’m in the US, but I don’t think for a second that OCE hardware will or should be diverted to the NA datacenter. Not even a little bit.

I am, however, skeptical that the OCE datacenter opening will have much impact on NA datacenter congestion.

Could be an incorrect assumption on my part, but I thought most OCE players are on the JP datacenter currently. Do many from the OCE region play on the NA datacenter? I come across a few Europeans in my day to day, but I’ve never met anyone from the Oceanic region. Totally anecdotal, I know, but I feeds into my perception.

I'm on the Elemental DC and the great majority of English speakers I play with are from Southeast Asia and Oceania. We've got a few North American players, but most of us are folks who have live in Asia or have lived there at some point and started playing while there or wanted to maintain ties to the place they lived.

I'd say the overall non-JP population across all JP DC is roughly equivalent to 1/4 to 1/3 NA, I'm completely spitballing here, but it seems about right. If absolute worst-case scenario happened, I could see SE making the hard decision to prioritize increasing capacity in NA simply due to numbers. I don't think we're at that point yet, and hope we never get there, but it's not out of the realm of possibility. I love my OCE friends and hope they get their own DC soon; it's past time!
