You don't need to be buying food other than really cheap fruit to give you the flat 3% EXP buff.

The potentially cheapest option is alligator pears sold on the marketboard – they're leftovers from a class quest requiring people to gather loads of them looking for HQ ones. So you can often get those selling in big stacks for 1 or 2 gil apiece. If not then the cheapest fixed prices from NPCs are oranges from the culinarians' guild in Limsa (3 gil) or milk from the material suppliers in the main city market halls.


I would also guess that if you're "being prepared" with food, you may also be buying new gear as you level up. You only need to be geared for the content you're currently doing, because you'll be synched back down anyway, and the MSQ will be giving you gear from quests. You also get one piece of gear for your class guaranteed to drop at the end of every dungeon.

And have you unlocked the challenge log? There's a lot of free gil to be had from that.
