One thing to keep in mind about alts is that since this game is designed around doing everything on a single character, almost nothing is account wide. You'll need to do the entire MSQ, all the unlocks, collect all the items, glamours, mounts, minions, titles, etc on every single character.

I've been playing for a long time, and have quite a few alts who have naturally progressed through the MSQ. It's super daunting now, but very doable (my latest alt completed ARR-ShB in about two weeks. Seems to get faster each time). I know a lot of people who maintain a bunch of characters at once, and once the MSQ is out of the way, it's actually very nice to be able to bypass the weekly lockouts for gear.

Each of my characters have their own theme and they center around a cluster of jobs, so not just one. I have consolidated roles and jobs into themes where, say, my scholarly character plays BLM/WHM/SMN because it makes sense that they'd dabble a bit in all of those studies. One character per job feels kind of excessive to me, personally, but chase your bliss!

In addition, I would suggest putting them all in the same FC. You cannot give items or gil to yourself, and being able to swap things around in an FC chest is key. I only have one master crafter who makes items for all my alts, and this is the only method to make it viable.

For what it's worth, it should also be noted that, in one of the trailers, the main character switches classes multiple times (and the class changes themselves happen on camera).

That is true. However, most people do not RP 'the warrior of light' for a number of reasons. Plus, the trailers are more symbolic representations of the expansions than literal events with the exception of the ARR trailer. And maybe 1.0 not sure on that.

The story is written around there being one singular WOL and things kind of fall apart if you have multiple people claiming to be them.

Most RPers tend to play more limited characters instead of the 'be everything and be the best at everything' type the WOL is if you take excelling at all the job/class quests.

Some people don't even RP combatants for their characters at all.

That was really my initial fear of RPing in FF14. I've seen self insert types in WoW RP where they have armor that cannot be damaged through. They also have machine guns and also they're grand magicians. It's a trope that I do my best to avoid: Characters should have skillsets, strengths and weaknesses. Y'know, like characters!

Thankfully a lot of my interactions have had none of that. Certainly a lot less of open warfare in the streets so it's been mostly pleasant thus far!

I only play one character and although he's maxed in all the DoL/DoH jobs and will soon be maxed in DRG and BRD, he's not a master of them all. From an RP perspective, I don't consider him skilled in anything other than DRG, BRD, BTN, CRP, and CUL with some minor fishing ability.

His full-time profession is Lancer with training in Dragoon skills during his time in Ishgard. His CRP skills started out as needing to know how to make and maintain his weapons, then branched off into doing woodwork as a part-time/not-adventuring-time craft. Having grown up in the Black Shroud, I figured BTN was a good choice as he would be familiar with herbs and other useful vegetation which then branched out (no pun intended) into dendrology as he learned woodworking. CUL because he needs to be able to feed himself. Then, because he's a 300% self-insert, I added BRD because I was a music teacher in my early years and did archery for quite a while.

If I were at all inclined to go through the MSQ again far enough to get different alts too the levels needed for cool glamours I might do that. As it stands, I'm just fine with my one and only character.

You could also take into consideration Thancred. He's been a Gladiator, Rogue and Gunbraker.

I guess it depends on what you want to do with your character. But at least there is some lore to back you up if you want to have your character skilled with more than one job.
