Confusing Restricted Names

It's more than just that in some cases, though. Some names are blocked because they CONTAIN a word that the filter finds offensive. That limits options a bit.

Yeah, that stuff is always good for a laugh.
Reminds me of how Pokemon named a creature Cofagrigus... but you can't trade it (or was it you can't wonder trade it) without giving it a nickname. Otherwise the in game censors get tripped by letters 3-5 in its own natural name.

I've had a similar instance when I made a roleplay venue, a cloth shop, called Eifawyb Draperies, but the name wasn't permitted. Apparently draperies is crude slang for something else. Really annoying as a non-English-native-speaker that I have to deal with stuff like that, but /shrug . What can you do.

Drapes is sometimes used to refer to female anatomy apparently. But I imagine it's the middle part. Apparently wow had an issue discussing grapes and chicken breast recipes.

But the part that gets me if it doesn't check if there's other context.

I can use any actual word with that letter combination in every other mmo I've played, yet here it's problematic. Why?

Because their word filter is super basic. It's not really some big mystery c'mon.

It's very strange what the automated system blocks, but actual GMs see as okay. I have a few friends who made incredibly questionable names on the basis that:

1) They were starting together and couldn't think of a good name yet, wanted time to think about it, but also wanted to just jump right in.
2) Surely they could just report each other later, take a strike, and rename.

It was a strat that has worked on other MMOS without fail. SE took a look at these obviously explicit innuendos and went "ALL GOOD AND CLEAN HERE! HAVE FUN, ALL!"

The reactions they get in roulettes are gold.

That is really odd. Thule is the name of a brand of expensive laptop bags in my country.

Unless that is why? Maybe Pepsi, Monster etc are also blocked.

This is the Thule I know too. They make a lot of other outdoorsy items as well.

While Thule is a fairly substantial company, I wouldn't put them on the same level as these others. Maybe they're just more protective of their trademark?

I don't think it has anything to do with the brand name, and everything to do with the Nazi connection.

Honestly I'm surprised that the company exists with that name, because I would think the same unfortunate historical connotations would be potentially bad for marketing.

Apparently there's some big fishing group/ store in Sweden too called '' Thule Group '' founded by a family with Thulin as their last name.
'' Thule '' actually sounds like a last name you'd hear around the north, that was actually my first thought when I read it before hearing about the Nazi stuff.

But I mean there are so many things this could be said about, and I also think there's a difference between the Nazi's having used the same term, name or even symbol and actual Nazi connections.
The Swastika for example is still used in Asia as a religious symbol.
I don't think that means the Swastika as a religious symbol in Asia should be censored or that it has connections to them in that sense.

It's the same with Norse mythology and history too, I see a lot of foreigners talk about it like it's '' connected to the Nazi's '' just because some of them obsessed about it and because there are people who still do and happen to be racist.

I think it's partly just for ease of moderating in this context.

Out in the real world if a brand wants to use it as a name or whatever with no negative connotations, and consumers accept that, that's their business.

Within the game, if someone wants to use it there is a fair chance that they are doing it deliberately and I don't think it's unreasonable for the moderators to just block it outright as an option. There will be a very small number of people who might want to innocently use the name, but with a near-infinite range of names to be created overall, the chances of it being an inconvenience are low.
