Can one truly be "carried" in an Ultimate Raid?

Might as well open the floodgates, debates, or whatever comes.

After a certain Twitch streamer cleared UCOB several hours ago, there has been debate on whether he got carried, earned his victory, etc.

That reminds me of something that I have wanted to ask for a while. Can one truly be "carried" in an Ultimate raid?

And that is considering the tight item level syncs, extremely tough mechanics, and that all Ultimate raids can never be done unsynced.

Considering he took a photo of his screen instead of a screenshot I'm gonna say yes, he was carried. There's no way you can clear an ultimate and not know where the screenshot button is.

Eh? What does one have to do with the other? Also, due to an oddity with FF14 installs, its possible for the game to lock the screenshot folder so you can't take them without jumping through a few hoops in windows first.

To the OP, I don't think its possible for someone to be a complete dead weight and still have a clear. But I think if the group as a whole is skilled enough, it can make up for someone's shortcomings if they're still contributing moderately well.

I agree with Alien and Bass, but a certain FFXIV reddit thread has quite the debate about the subject. I was hesitant to put the link in the opening post for public reference earlier, but might as well do it now to cover the bases. And there are people who probably post here, but don't post in the FFXIV Reddit, so that's that.

As for being carried, I would assume there are certainly levels of being carried. So he may or may not have been carried to a degree, I didn't watch and I haven't done ultimates myself to know the finer points.

Unlike other MMOs, the screenshot button here doesn't properly work ( At least on some PCs ) for a weird reason. When I started playing the game, I wanted to take a screenshot but got an "Unable to screenshot" message.
That problem wasn't solved for me until later after starting SB, which was after months of playing ( After completely finishing ARR and HW exactly like how some new players are doing with the new free trial ), and that only happened because I found an article on how to fix the screenshot issue.
While your statement can be valid in other MMOs, it's not here because I can see others having the same issue or maybe an even more complicated version of it ( As technical issues usually can vary in complexity )

Seven of the best FFIXIV raiders/streamers got together to teach him the raid and get him a clear at a pace the vast majority of the player base probably wouldn't experience short of paying for it with real money.

As long as credit is being given where it's due and he's not acting like this suddenly makes him amazing at the game I don't see what the issue is.

And while you can't do a true "carry" of UCOB due to certain mechanics like the towers causing instant wipes if someone screws them up, the DPS checks are lax enough that tank-only clears have been managed and a 7-man clear would be theoretically possible if not for the mechanics requiring a full party.

I think there is something to say the popular streamer (content creator in general) is not really an accurate representation of normal gameplay experience, given many of these individuals experience treatment and opportunities not representative of the majority. The on call, extremely talented, set your own loot rules, plays videogames as a form of living (can spend working hours on games), etc. There is of course the other side, like having to entertain while playing and expectations on you but not trying to paint an entirely balanced image of all experience (at the moment).

So when people notice something off.. sure yeah, what they have is not what you'll get as regular Joe or Jane will have in most situations.

That said the dude totally cleared the content. You can't not do your part and clear that type of content, he clearly, imo lol, earned the win and cleared the content. In ultimate there is no carry :P. Maybe you might say others were more or less mvp, but he still did the content. I'm aware there were calls made by others making it easier, but it's common to have team calls, and one person may just be good at it- so sometimes it's like that and everyone else listens, also.... there is honestly a lot of call software out there too that is quite popular.... So... Shrug to that. I still say he did it.

Just worth noting that the people who are both popular and make livings playing the game are going the be in a different sphere than those who are not. How he did it is going to be an unreasonable expectation for the majority. And that's not said to be an insult, that's just the reality of different positions, just like in real life I guess lol. Say for example Asmon gets to use master loot and pretty much everyone with him is there for the good time not for the content itself (so people don't need him to do farm runs for them, it's for him, and they mostly already know every bit of content).
