Apologies that my ex was also dating this girl and had a similar experience to me, except she showed up in person to take it one step further.

We didn't just give out our information to random people. These were people we had real relationships with. What? Do people even do that anymore?

Side note: I did also try to take it up with law enforcement on my end but getting justice for harassment/threats across state lines is not something that's easily done.
That is a shame and it is unfortunate you had to experience such a thing. What they are saying is true the reality is we all make choices and sure sometimes a relationship goes sour and given the way our laws work not much can be done unless one is willing to bleed their bank account dry seeking justice.

All you can do is learn and be more careful and mindful moving forward. It largely is a personal responsibility to prevent or deal with stalkers if they are non violent. Do not get me wrong it is unfortunate but that is how things work within our legal system. Many aspects are just band-aid fixes that will do nothing to prevent a stalker from causing real harm. Though that is also part of the risk of dating and opening up you never really know who you are opening up to it is a leap of faith that has consequences.
