In the 1990s we thought we had VR nailed down. Hey, the headgear is only like a really heavy football helmet - no big deal! It's full VGA graphics inside (1024x768)! And all of this can be yours for the low, low price of $235,000 (price for gear only; SGI Indigo not included). (Pays half a million, gets graphics 1/8 the quality of Minecraft). PARTY! I will not lie, VR is what drew me to study computer engineering in the early 90s. Not that I stuck with it... but, I digress...
In the 2010s and early 2020s we, again, thought we had it nailed down. Now we can get "quality" VR gear for $1500 all-inclusive. The graphics are way higher resolution. We're still light-years away from living in VR, but hey, the gear is cheap, so when our brain makes us jump over that gap between buildings, and we smash all the gear and the TV too, it's all good. Software is extremely lacking, and nothing looks realistic "inside of the VR world," but we're still working on it.
VR where people will put it on and not want to take it off (Ready Player One, etc.) is, what, fifty years away? More? Once it gets that good, it's gonna be a huge social issue, because there will be addiction issues, body neglect, etc. Will we regulate illegal activities within VR? We don't seem to care about murder and death, but what about illegal sexual activity? It ain't gonna be pretty.
