I played XI with a controller, which worked great. I never considered kb/mouse an option in that game. I started XIV using a controller, after a few weeks I bought a steel series merc keyboard and have never looked back. I had originally switched because targeting was absolutely atrocious prior to 1.18, and was able to create dual layered macro for targeting which still works way better than any of the targeting options SE has added since. (I created a /targetnpc macro that I can initiate with a single button press on my keyboard.)

You can do this with a controller too, technically it takes two actions but they can be initiated nearly simultaneously. I have it set to the very first macro on one type, macro is accessed via left or right trigger for me. Hold down trigger, press confirm. Target NPC.

that's not a single button press, so it's not the same.

It's nearly the same. Both buttons can be pressed at the same time, as the buttons are located in positions that utilize different parts of the hand. Once the trigger is held down you can immediately press confirm to use the target NPC macro. It is mere fractions of a second slower, the time difference is negligible at best.

It's not the same because it doesn't achieve the goal, a single button press for targeting. I don't really care how long it takes, two buttons is two buttons and I wanted an option to only use one.
