What a bizarre alternate universe that would be to live in; that people actually are flirting with the idea that not only does Yoshi P and his team continue to sustain Final Fantasy 11 online, but also Final Fantasy 14 online, and another Final Fantasy online title; just so they aren't stressed enough.

Slow down ya'll and bring some of that dream energy back into the atmosphere.

If it's good I'd play both. Simple as that. Don't have to play only one mmo.

But also, flooding the market with your own products is never a financially sound idea. They will inevitably compete with each other to some extent.
I don't doubt that the risk exists to some degree, but it really depends on how differentiated it was to their present MMOs. If it's something like Overwatch (action-based, no real persistent world), I don't see much of a cannibalisation risk; if it's like Blue Protocol (action-based but it has a persistent, albeit instanced, world), slightly higher risk, but again, he is discussing it in terms of what they think their audiences desire and he thinks there is some segmentation in that regard. Part of why MMOs can cannibalise each other is because of sub fees as well, and the type of product he is alluding to is usually not accompanied by those, so much as cash shops or season passes. Obviously money is money but it does take one barrier away.

Bear in mind their design philosophy is to go away and play something else with 14 when you run out of things you want to do in it, and that happens pretty quickly for many people - their current content model doesn't seem like it will change. So if that product played in one's spare time were a SE product, it's not like they'd lose from it. It'd also scarcely count as flooding. If they know a chunk of their playerbase is already doing this, they could actually stand to gain from it.

If XI-2 is a no-show then XVII better be an actual MMORPG, which XIV isn't really.

Remember that XIV was announced in ~2007, they didn't wait until XI was dying to start work so I'd be surprised if the next MMO wasn't already in the works.
Between XI and XIV, XI is clearly the one that's aging the worst. So I definitely agree with you. Keep XIV going, it's popular and it will be successful for a while. But make a newer updated iteration of an entry closer to XI than XIV for people who wanted something like XI but not as clunky/PS2-like graphics.

I would try it out for sure, unless initial reviews paint it as being like, 1.0 levels of bad.

Would I drop FFXIV? I'd only fully drop FFXIV if I stop enjoying it. I'd just play it less if there was another MMO in my life.

Whether that would happen depends on FFXVII. Do I like it? Is it just 'FFXIV but better' or does it have its own distinct game design philosphy and focus? There's no way to really answer this question without seeing this theoretical FFXVII Online firsthand.

What if instead of a whole new game Square-Enix simply decided to remake/upgrade Final Fantasy XIV?.

I dream of seeing my cute Miqo'te in photo-realistic graphics.

We wouldn't have to quit FFXIV but simply move to a newer version with a modern look (high-end graphics), then we would simply continue to play in our favorite game, it might cost us one entire expansion in development time but I believe it would be worth the wait.

I don't think the MMORPG genre is dying, there are more games now than before and remaking/upgrading FFXIV would only make SE more money in the long run.

Here hoping Yoshida reads this, this is the ideal solution for a new FF MMO that can move all FFXIV players at once to the new Online game.

If the team were to pull a "WoW-Cataclysm" and use an expansion to essentially redo the existing world and its assets, I'd happily buy it and continue spending all my game time in XIV. I truly adore a great deal about XIV and would be very happy to keep playing it for years and years provided they fix housing, update the hardware infrastructure and graphics, and continue putting out excellent story content.

I'd also be super-stoked for them to do an Ivalice-based actual MMO with the grittier/tragic atmosphere of the original FF: Tactics. I'd buy it in a heartbeat. If my machine at the time couldn't run it, I'd buy a new machine.

I think I will be done with MMOs once FF14 comes to a close honestly. But that's just me.

So FFXVII should be the next MMORPG.

If Yoshi-P launch a new FF online game (in 2023) and Endwalkers is the last expansion... what would you do?

    1. You'd move inmediately?
    2. You'd keep playing FFXIV for a while?
    3. You'd play both if can have a discount for the pack?
    4. You'd play both no matter what?
I would keep on going with FFXIV. I love it so much and there is a HUGE amount of content I have not done and things I want to accomplish. I figure I am good for another 5-10 years just with FFXIV.
