This is actually an interesting question to me. XI continues because of a lot of reasons, and even now I would probably play it on the side if time allowed. Even as much as things have been sped up in XI, it still has a lot of very long-term goals you can engage in. XIV is a much different critter though. Strictly theme-parky. At the point where all story content is done, and all the fights cleared at least once for the hell of it, I would have no reason to keep playing this game in the face of a fresh FF MMO.

This is the thing: FFXIV feels too easy, too on rails, too theme parky and downright claustrophobic most of the time, unfortunately. FFXI was a better MMO experience in it's core, it just needs small modernization in terms of interface, controls and graphics specially and maybe with the addition of a better quest log and some more interesting side quests to be done. FFXI players are loyal and SE would do well to give them more attention both in FFXI and in FFXIV, FFXIV should be more like FFXI in every single way.

With the 20th anniversary of XI coming up we might get some news on SE's future MMO outlook.

I would like to see an XI-2 instead of XVII. A new Vana'diel based game, with it's core gameplay similar to XI but with a few additions from XIV so I'm not waiting 3 hours for a party like the bad old days.

If XI-2 is a no-show then XVII better be an actual MMORPG, which XIV isn't really.

Remember that XIV was announced in ~2007, they didn't wait until XI was dying to start work so I'd be surprised if the next MMO wasn't already in the works.

Between XI and XIV, XI is clearly the one that's aging the worst. So I definitely agree with you. Keep XIV going, it's popular and it will be successful for a while. But make a newer updated iteration of an entry closer to XI than XIV for people who wanted something like XI but not as clunky/PS2-like graphics.

XI players really deserve some love. Least SE could do is a modernization of the game's interface and controls and integrate the HD mod into the game.

I'm absolutely sure they'd much more quickly announce a remake of the engine of XIV than make another one. Or do this just the same and rename it whatever new numbered FF it would be.

If the combat, and story is good..and has good content sure? Nothing ties me down to an mmorpg, and if a better one comes out. I will go to it.

When a decent western MMO comes along, perhaps... or a SE one with a darker direction to it. Whichever comes first. I am keeping an active eye on upcoming MMOs. There are some JRPGs I've appreciated, but I will agree that their themes generally do little for me as a genre. I mainly enjoy their aesthetics a bit better than Western ones, and sometimes the odd one comes along with the right story to match it.

It doesn't help that FFXIV started out as being very similar in tone and mood to the more serious JRPG's out there such as Final Fantasy XII and Vagrant Story. We got another taste of that with Bozja, at least, which to me is the height of the game's storytelling so far.

Whether the writers can ever surpass that remains to be seen, though I'd like more inspiration to be taken from the likes of Shadow Hearts, Breath of Fire IV and the Legend of Dragoon.

Thankfully there's a number of MMO's set to launch in the coming months/years that may or may not provide some much needed healthy competition in a rather stagnant market. Perhaps that'll encourage bolder decisions where FFXIV's story is concerned, or at least provide a viable alternative to play.
