Selecting Worlds/servers

How important is it to keep all of your characters on one world? I have 3 toons on Ultros already and would like to make a lancer, but it keeps telling me the world isn't accepting new characters at this time. As a subscriber, I would hope I could make what I want easily and readily. I just keep pulling up saved image, pick Ultros and won't accept my toon, frustrating. But, still enjoy the game on my other toons, but would kind of like to try others..........

Two things:

A number of worlds are currently 'congested', which means they cannot accept new players. It may be the end result of problem with another MMO that has players coming here to see if this game works for them.

You can become a lancer on any of your current 3 characters by going to Gridania, and talking to Lancer trainers (that nice blue plus-sign quest). Unlike some other MMOs, you do not need to create multiple characters if you want to experiment with other classes/jobs. For now, I would suggest you try this. At some point I expect your current world to open up again for new characters, but I don't anticipate that happening until the next expansion launches in late November.

Oh yeah, I get the congestion from the mass exodus. I've already changed my three toons once I hit 10, and starting a new job is kind of tedious redoing everything over and over. I'm in the mind set of keeping toons completely separate and with a singular job now. I don't mind making a toon on another server if I can still trade between worlds, that's my concern.

Sometimes character creation gets restricted when the server is busy, but it opens up eventually unless it has congested status. You can try when everyone is sleeping.
