    Issues with targeting mechanics

I'm new to FF14, and I've been having a blast so far, but I noticed that some of the targeting mechanics don't work as I expected.

Tab targeting (even with Cone selected) feels unintuitive, the start attack ability cone is much narrower (~90 degrees instead of 180) than other games, and the Auto face target option redirects my character to run back at the target.

Maybe I'll elaborate on the first 2 in another post, but the one that is bugging me is the last one. I've tried various methods to avoid this unwanted movement redirection such as jumping during the ability cast, wiggling the camera, and making macros to facetarget before casting a spell. Nothing seems to work well except one option, Legacy Movement settings. It's awesome how fluid the combat feels with this option enabled, but I really don't like the way the camera movement feels with this option enabled.

Does anyone have a solution to this? Maybe someone here has some tips that could help me out.

    Thanks!

The auto face target option isn't a problem if you use legacy settings and disable auto-fly.

I'm in the same boat. Just bought the game and liking everything but targeting. It seems very unintuitive. The targeting options are confusing as well. I've watched several videos and it's just not coming together for me. I hope to figure this out as well, cause I don't want to be the one thing to kill the game for me. Playing a healer can't be having targeting issues.

For a healer you can just target using the party list. It is a problem if you heal someone with auto face target, but you can macro your attacks to turn it on and then off so it's off when you heal.

Your first problem can be addressed by prioritizing the Target Nearest Enemy button instead of tab targeting. I don't remember the default but you should set it to something close to resting position like [G] because you will use it a lot. If using a controller you can macro /targetenemy.

Your second problem is Standard controls are just bad; you want to switch to Legacy controls.

If you are on keyboard, then in re: Legacy camera feeling bad, that can be fixed by rebinding a few of your keys so that Legacy is "Standard but the camera doesn't snap anymore". Rebind these keys and I promise you it will feel much better:

    Code:
    Key Standard Legacy
    ===    ==========================    ==========================
    W Move Forward Move Forward
S Move Back / Walk Backwards Move Back / Walk Backwards
Q Strafe Left Move Left / Turn Left
E Strafe Right Move Right / Turn Right
A Move Left / Turn Left Point Camera to the Left
D Move Right / Turn Right Point Camera to the Right
If you rebind your keys so that Legacy's Move [Left|Right] keys are the keys you were using for standard Strafe, and you bind Legacy's Point Camera [Left|Right] keys to use the keys you were using for standard Move [Left|Right], your legacy movement will become "standard movement, but you never backpedal and the camera never snaps in a disorienting way".

    Thanks for the suggestion Rongway.

I should have clarified the specific issues I had with the camera with Legacy controls.

With Standard controls, "Left Click + Mouse" controls the camera without affecting the characters facing direction, and "Right Click + Mouse" does this + affects the characters facing direction.
"Left Click + Mouse" = Only camera movement, while the character is standing still.
"Left Click + Mouse" = Only camera movement, while the character is moving.
"Right Click + Mouse" = Also affects character facing, while the character is standing still.
"Right Click + Mouse" = Also affects character facing, while the character is moving.

With Legacy controls, Left Click and Right Click have the exact same functionality, and change based on character movement.
"Left Click + Mouse" or "Right Click + Mouse" = Only camera movement, while the character is standing still.
"Left Click + Mouse" or "Right Click + Mouse" = Also affects character facing, while the character is moving.

Looking above, I lose functionality of 2 of the previous camera / character controls I previously had with standard movement. It is also just confusing to try and learn and relearn this different type of character/camera movement, especially when I switch between other games that don't use this kind of camera movement.

Oh. Your mouse buttons do what you want them to do while autorunning, but if what you really want to do is look behind your character while you're running away, there's a /keybind for Movement > Flip Camera, which will give you a rear view as long as you hold the button.

I don't think it's enough make me want to switch though, because of the overlap between games. Thanks for the idea though. After looking into it a bit more, it doesn't seem like there is a way to fix this issue. I'll just need to get good a wiggling the camera while I play.
