Wouldn't want to play accountant, but I can't help but imagine it would hurt a lot. Especially in the west market.
Now more deeply related to the question I doubt many if any would quit because they lost third party tools. I do imagine a decent amount of people would do a lot less of the harder content though, which would disappoint them and this while not causing a mass exodus would allow another mmo to /potentially/ snag them if it looks better.
Third party addons have been here for a long while now, and the addons people fear from WoW roughly that entire time, just silent and in the background. Some loss of QoL for not allowing them without entirely running away from them; however, the base game itself (FFXIV w/o addons) as a result of this has WAY more QoL, I feel, than say the direct competition tends to (WoW w/o addons, FFXIV wins QoL, generally, imo). I feel it's fine this way it is, just so long as they keep well funding their UI department lol. They have largely done a very good job. Though on a minor crying tangent I still have two minor gripes on the map UI, feels like an image viewer over being a 'map' ui, and the red letters in the chocobo stable (when capped) is almost indistinguishable from the black lettering when using the light UI, along with some other minor wishes- made post in the UI forum.
I wonder if they could somehow make a in game personal parser that has no ability to share (to prevent players requesting it) but can compare to different sets of anonymously aggregated data (like "same job, similar ilvl, etc"). I guess it's unnecessary given the third party tools (websites and tools), but I generally dislike the idea that something is done better outside of the game vs inside (especially when it is given the don't tell don't ask treatment). Main gripe for the Eureka stuff is the discords tend to make the best place to group for that, vs any system in game. Though sometimes solutions against that don't seem readily apparent, adopted by community for whatever reason, or financially reasonable.
PC players, PC player, where are you going to?
Considering it even lasted long enough to make it to ARR thanks exclusively to PC players... Yes.
It would die? Yes
It would die for that reason? No
I don't think they ever do away with pc platform since it first came out in 2010 for pc platform only and didn't come out for the ps3 till 2013. I think they do away with consoles before pc since the consoles is limited.
If ffxi is any indication, yes— but a long time from now.
More like be crippled to the point of stagnation where updates would take 4-5 years, they would be minimal… aka life support. That does not mean it’s ‘dead’, it can always recover [highly unlikely], games only official die when bought by gameforge or gamigo. Then they are bleed until 0 players play them.
