And even then shorts cut above the thigh would get a bit of side eye.

either the devs stick to what is acceptable and churn out limited variation but inoffensive designs (probably making 10+ identical looking trouser options in the process), or design varied outfits that might be derided as too flamboyant for the intended audience. see "why aren't there more manly man hairstyles" for examples of this approach backfiring.

edit: for clarity, i don't think gear should be gender locked at all, its a waste of design and texturing resources. wear what you want the fashion police aint real

Yeah the problem imo is not that female characters get skirts, shorts, dresses etc.
It's that male clothing is too limited and repetitive.
If anything mens clothing has more to learn from womens clothing than the other way around, but people just see some exposed skin and they flip out and it per usual ends up being about covering women up instead of giving men more options.

That's why I think it's refreshing whenever I see threads that are not obsessing about wanting female characters to have less options but instead wants to expand them to male characters too.
Because normally threads and comments about this tends to be ranting about how male characters got pants while they got a skirt or shorts.
When in reality the latter actually adds more variety to the gear than the former which imo is a positive.

I'm not a person who into wearing skirt but I don't mind using "girly" accessories such as Frontier Ribbon or even the Makai Markswoman's Ribbon for funsies... Do we have to wait 3 years again like bunny's outfit to make this happen?
