Pretty sure they've said no new races due to the work needed to implement them. The two latest races still aren't even complete and are simply getting their male/female counter parts.

If they were to add another small race I sure hope it's not another redundant human-looking one. Because if so, what is even the point? Hrothgar are the only one that don't look like human with strange makeup and accessories.
Ivalice Moogles would be pretty great.
Adding new races is alot of work most likely because of the need to make new versions of every equipment asset with a visual component for that race due to the way the game files are done. I don't believe they use a meshing system to fit something on a frame but make a version of each asset for each race/gender combo. Hence the lack of sliders in the character creator and there not really being any really noticeable stretching of armor/clothing seen in game on characters.

I find it funny that people ask about flying rats while SE can't program their way around Hrothgar hats or bunny ears. And moogles are essentially a big head with tiny extremities and wings. How are you supposed to see rings, or even sleeves?
In before 'moogles will only be able to equip head and chest gear'. lol

People tend to ask ask for Ivalice moogles. Ones that build airships and are a competent species in 12, TA, and TA2 that roughly fit the lalafell frame and have ears that could possibly work with scaled miqo'te headgear. Not the pathetic excuse for kupos that are Eorzean gnarled-limb alcoholics with wings. Eorzean moogles are pretty much the worst version we've ever had. Had they not done Montblanc and Hurdy dirty, more would understand~I find it funny that people ask about flying rats while SE can't program their way around Hrothgar hats or bunny ears. They all but ripped the 12 model and tore off the wings/pom for Loporrits. A pity.
Edit: I know what they've said re: races, it's not like I have any delusion it'd ever happen at this point. But I can still dream~

A number of FF titles had moogles as small flying helpers. The only main series FF title that actually had moogles fight that I can recall was FFVI where you could recruit Mog and also had that battle at the start using 3 parties of moogles. I recall some titles using Moogle as a status debuff similar to piggy/toad/imp which basically made the character unable to fight.People tend to ask ask for Ivalice moogles. Oh I know - Coincidentally, Mog is also an absolute boss. I encourage everyone to look up some of the old FF6 US commercials on youtube! They gave him...quite a voice, heh.
Most FFs have them as small critters, moguri - mole-bats. Eorzean ones are still pretty incompetent and often designed to infuriate the player as annoying tedious lazy fools. Their design is even more twig-limbed on top of that vs, say, FF6 or especially FF9.
The Moogle status effect comes from Seiken Densetsu if I recall. First showed up in SD1, renamed FF Adventure over here. I think it's only in the SD games still?
Ivalice is really the only other setting they're ever shown to be fighting, in the TA games, and the only one where they're more lapine than mole. Competent, intelligent, whimsical, and highly technical. A fun combination for a fantasy race. I'm not saying that's the norm, heh. Much as I wish it was!
But they are what people tend to ask for when talking about playable moogles. Partially because they actually fit a small PC model (moreso than fluff molebats at least, and moreso than something like goblin bodies). Partially because moogles in general are a FF mainstay. Partially because Ivalice has already been linked to XIV - they just screwed us on the moogles there while including every other FFTA race, then specifically laughed about the moogles in one dialogue. It was really disappointing for anyone who liked the TA games, cause they absolutely butchered Montblanc's personality on top of that. And partially because there's still a chance to piggyback easily off lalaframe frames.
Burmecians and Lilties would also potentially work as a race, but I think both of them (especially Burmecian) would require way more model work. Burmecians also aren't super tiny. As pointed out below they're actually quite tall, but the FF9 style makes them look shorter. Though I think they could still be stylized down to a 4-5 ft range to keep with that style if really desired.
That said, again I'm under no delusions over here. I do like talking about moogles though~

In VI moogles were minding their own business but also didn't hesitate to help a complete stranger. In IX they're very hard workers despite the obsession with kupo nuts. In XII even more so.Oh I know - Coincidentally, Mog is also an absolute boss. I encourage everyone to look up some of the old FF6 US commercials on youtube! They gave him...quite a voice, heh.

I don't remember what they were like before VI. But Thal's balls the XIV Moogles ride on the "Haha they're cute but they exploit you" trope way too much. Which is something that XIV does with most of its 'cute' little characters too... Namazu, Lalafel...
You forgot about the part in FFXI where some of them went rogue and committed a Moogle Kupo d'Etat...In VI moogles were minding their own business but also didn't hesitate to help a complete stranger. In IX they're very hard workers despite the obsession with kupo nuts. In XII even more so.

So they don't always play nice lol.

Lilties would actually be really freaking adorable. And onions and potatoes are always a good combination. Either they or the Ivalician Moogle would a nice addition for a smaller race when and if we were to ever get another.
