Something to try for random DX11 crashes

    Hi,

For those suffering from the random dx11 crashes that have been plaguing some users, I found a possible solution. Note, this might not work for everyone, but I haven't crashed since I did it.

My system is a AMD Threadripper 1950x, and a GeForce 1080Ti, so this may be Threadripper specific, but as I understand it, most of the Ryzen chips are built similarly.

In the case of Threadripper, the CPU is split into two distinct "CCX" entities with a bridge called "Infinity Fabric" between them. I found that by limiting FF14 to only run on one CCX, the crashes have stopped.

Look into a program called "ProcessLasso". It allows you to set CPU affinity for a specific program, and makes sure that it can ONLY use those CPU cores. So if you have an 8 core CPU, tell it only to use cores 0-4 (or 0-8 if you have hyperthreading or the equivalent). My chip has 16 cores with HT, so either 0-15 or 16-31. I chose 16-31.

For me, having anything running in the background, like a browser made it 10x worse. Now I've been TRYING to make it crash, and its been nice and stable.

TLDR: If you have random dx11 crashes try using 'process lasso' to limit ff14 to only use one half of your CPU's logical cores. It might not help, but its worth a shot.

FFXIV, like most video games, only uses a handful of cores to run, and assuming Intel cpus or AMD TRs operates in a similar fashion to my Ryzen 9 3950x, it knows which of the cores on the chip are the "best" cores, and those are the cores that get the single / low threaded workloads. Me telling my processor that it can't use the 8 "worst" performing cores for this game won't change anything because it isn't using them anyways.
