I don't like these either but luckily they are pretty far in between

No. This is just an excuse for a poorly designed encounter. Boring gameplay shouldn't be why you feel "helpless". In general, I find all the times you play as the Scions lackluster because it all results to spamming mostly one button endlessly. It was a cute idea at first but they've overdone it by now.

I agree it's boring, like most of the drawn out RP duties. There's nothing interesting about playing as those characters for 5-10 minutes pressing the same 1-2 buttons 95% of the fight.

But you don't "get destroyed" if you fight Zenos head on. Yugiri or Lyse will cast a decent sized heal on you any time your HP drops below 50%. That's a big difference to get used to when you come here from WoW - you don't need your HP constantly topped off. You're usually going to be okay if you're at least 50%, especially in solo duties and dungeons, so the NPCs are programmed to heal when you reach that point.

It's a really poor way to promote other jobs. They're more likely to ensure players who otherwise would never touch them never will.

I'm usually leaving those duties going "so glad that XX isn't really like that".

i can post a vod if you like lol. first time around, as these fights are usually pretty easy, i just stood infront of him, spamming my 2 buttons, dodging his really easy abilities, used my self sustain whenever it was ready and i jsut straight up died from his auto attacks and the unavoidable aoe blast he does periodically. idc about my health being at 100% all of the time but i would like it to not reach 0 when there is no counterplay for it. maybe it was just some technical hiccup where the npcs didnt heal me properly but i died nontheless. i understand they want you to feel like you are barely holding on but making your players redo a duty for the sake of rp takes away the fun imo

I am soo in agreement with you OP. I don't think the developers realise how much damage this causes for some of us. There should be a option to skip it. It not only completely ruins the story's flow but forces you out of your comfort zone for no reason but to show off a gimmick.
They seem to have put a lot of thought into the game but I think this spoils their own hard work.

I think the reason people hate this fight so much is because WE SPENT SO MUCH OF STORMBLOOD LOSING TO ZENOS!

I mean, seriously, I think there are 3 instances of "The Zenos Fight" where we're about to win and he just pushes a "No, I win" button on his hotbar or something and gets to win in the cinematic. And when we finally win at the end of a Dungeon with an extra Trial just to put an extra point on how hard we won, we come BACK into doing "The Zenos Fight" all over again, now with 70% less kit.

Playing with other characters is awesome, Shadowbringers have some incredible highlights with that. Playing "The Zenos Fight" is infuriating.

Playing "the Zenos fight" is a standard RPG trope to have an unwinnable boss fight where you just need to survive long enough to "pass".

In any case I am not seeing the connection to roleplaying battles here.

Escort Quests are also a staple of RPGs. Doesn't mean they are good. There's a reason why you barely see a "Supposed to lose" fight anymore. At best least pull a Demon's Soul and sneak a way to win in the fight. Hell, Rhanjit was done so much better.

The connection is exactly the fight he's complaining about. The Hien fight is not liked not because Hien is bad, he's awesome, I don't think people dislike the character. But ofc you're not gonna be happy that you just played as Hien even though I think he's a badass. You just played yet another instance of "The Zenos Fight".

I've been through Hien's fight several times now and it has never bothered me that the fight is unwinnable. It never even would have occurred to me that this is an issue.

I agree with you that the early Zenos fights made mockery of the story as well as committing the crime of taking control away from the player. Bosses with 'I win' buttons should be banned from games, they are with out a doubt infuriating. They didn't even have to do that. Why throw him in with the hero off the bat? It made no sense.
