I really would like to see what their music sounds like. Since they can "do far better", and they graduated from Prague Music Conservatory, and could create this kind of music at 10 years old... they'd likely have music up on some kind of platform! Would love to hear it. :P

Although as far as the arrangement goes, compared of first 25 seconds of this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-O8CnCLfAc - god, can you not hear the actual thing? I really miss it in FF14. It's actually quite frustrating, knowing all this work and potential "un-explored". The terrible synthetic soundbanks just do this music such an injustice..
Your example sounds like generic fantasy music number twelve with a tinge of Star wars. Easily forgotten and not something that dramatically ties itself to the game. You may have an education, but one thing I learned from all the educated people around me, they often lack real world perspective, particularly on non traditional formats such as video games.

I call you insipid, because you are. There's more to music than whatever your 213 year old traditional music conservatory taught you.

Your entire premise centers around that the synth won't sound as good as real instruments, when synths can create brand new sounds that old instruments cannot accurately reproduce.

I love traditional orchestration as much as anybody, but discounting synths as a tool to give us something wonderful, and further than that, discounting the entire soundtrack because it incorporates synthesis just makes me think that your conservatory must have a rather addlepated curriculum with some old fogies that can't get over the old ways.

I love the music from this game, as a matter of fact I blast the music in my car while driving to work with my windows down and use a lot of the fast beat music when I go for a walk around the building and parking lot of my job while on my breaks and lunches. It's music like A long fall and e scape that makes me want to walk fast so I can do two miles of walking in 2 15 minute breaks and a half an hour lunch. ^_^ plus Knee Higb Soken is awesome and leave the man alone he's very talented.

Also discounting synths really is terrible when there have been very successful musicians who have used synthesizers in the past. I love the talented band ELP. (Emmerson Lake and Palmer)

Proper use of attack/loop/decay can create all sorts of new and wonderful sounds that are out of reach with traditional, dare I say "analog," instruments. Personally, I will take MIDI any day over a live recording with a conductor who's half asleep. The "remastered" Kingdom Hearts soundtracks, for example, are perhaps one of the worst crimes against VGM ever... orchestrated.

FFXII's remaster fared a little better, but, if you've memorized the original album, a lot of the most memorable parts of the most memorable tracks had sounds that couldn't be reproduced by humans, and you'll notice their absence on the new recordings. I think it's telling that FFXIV went with the original MIDI versions when the Zodiac Age tracks were likely available, considering the timing, though that might have also been for parity with the FF Tactics tracks.

(Oh, right, there's an entire raid series in Stormblood that recycles internationally-acclaimed synth-orchestra tracks that I hope will change your mind on MIDI, at least a little. Won't hold my breath, though.)

Music is the one thing consistently amazing about this game.

    HOWEVER...

Soken, as much of an outstanding composer that he is, isn't using the best of his creativity when it comes to night themes. Ever since Heavensward his night themes are all literally piano solos of their respective overworld themes. It's super predictable, repetitive and cliche.
Other games know how to keep the nocturnal atmosphere of their regions without being one-trick ponies. And funny enough even in this game Soken himself does it vastly better, when it comes to city-state night music.

Contrary to popular belief, this OST is actually too large for one person.

    https://vgmdb.net/album/77608

The night themes are generally (but not always) arranged by Yukiko Takada, who joined the sound team with Heavensward. This includes "Crimson Sunset" (Kugane) and "Night in the Brume" (Ishgard). She's a damn good pianist, so I'm not complaining.

Shinryu's theme ("The Worm's Tail"), incidentally, was arranged by Yoshitaka Suzuki, who regularly does orchestrations for the Final Fantasy series and beyond. The Pillars and Crystarium night arrangements are his. Gonna go out on a limb and suggest synth was a conscious creative choice there.

I disagree with this. I really like that it's just a single piano composition during night. Also, it may also not be a choice of his, more like that he would be requested to do that as well. Who knows?

Most of the music in FFXIV is really good, but some make me want to go deaf.

I sometimes go back to some zone depending on the mood.
