ddos attack on EU

Byrnhildr is noticeably having some server strain issues too, things are taking longer to load than usual.

I don't think this is the work of WoW players. FFXIV likely became a target because it currently gets alot of attention which in return gives the attackers a feeling of satisfaction when they bring the servers on its knees.

Other than popularity and internet scumbags, there's also the possibility there was some sort of planned event on the EU DC set for this evening that was targetted. I don't know if that's the case as I don't follow the big streamers, especially those in EU, but it wouldn't surprise me if that was a "reason" such as it is.

Unless someone goes "we did it" it's utterly meaningless to speculate. Many DDoS attacks are actually paid for by other companies to intentionally harass their competition, so even if they find the source it's just as likely to be a professional group hired by someone as anything else.

Nothing new. FFXIV has had DDoS attacks all of its lifespan. Sad people do it
