Sure doesn't bode well for female Hrothgar then...

I suspect the development team realised that for all the celebrating there is around niche aesthetics, most people don't really put their money where their mouths are. It's much the same way as how many people go on and on about how amazing female roegadyn supposedly are and yet the reality is that they're amongst the least played race and gender combination in the game.
Personally what I find offputting about femroes is their animations. A lot of them are weirdly stiff.

I wish I could care about highlanders and femroes (even tried making a femroe alt), but it was their nonhuman elements that drew me to Au Ra in the first place. I love the males the way they are (aside from the puny tails), I just wish they hadn't made such a parody of their female counterparts. Why'd it have to be them...?

The Au Ra concept art, for both male and female, was really awesome. IIRC Yoshida mentioned something about them semi-recently, saying they were pretty neat.
I'd love to see those in game. There are of course probably other races people want to see too, like maybe short and furry now that we have big lol, and that's fine. But I would say the male and female concept Au Ra might have a decent chance to both bring something a bit unique to the table and yet also be quite popular. Particular the latter Au Ra, though face types for the more extreme I think would be quite nice.
Super model look will always win #1 though. So the latter face would keep it popular, the former being interesting but unlikely to edge out anything but the other lower races.
Lot of work but I imagine they could include this as a third clan to Au Ra, and then you might slowly see third clans to other races too (which reduces some of the animation / bone work perhaps). Like Lala third clan might be a fuzzy moogle like race. Maybe Highlander is closer to Royal Garlean. Hrothgar might need a different bone but you might imagine one closer to the tiger primal from Stormblood. Elezen might do well to have a more stereotypical elf appearance, perhaps a partial blood race (or concentrated somehow), to lessen the dhalmel neck yet accentuate the classical elf features. It is neat FFXI / FFXIV tried to not be super stereotypical I suppose, but honestly it's a little funny elves are not the most popular because usually they are in other games.

I m pretty sure, we re not getting any additional character costumization options, since every resource are going into male Viera and female Hrothgar.I wish I could care about highlanders and femroes (even tried making a femroe alt), but it was their nonhuman elements that drew me to Au Ra in the first place. Maybe with FFXVII...

Yeah that's a depressing thought...
i do think it‘s possible we‘ll get some more character customization options with say 7.0. new races? certainly not. but new face options, beard options and other customization should be possible. yoshi p always pointed out how stressful it is to create new races because of the gear they would need to adjust, and all the different animations. more races = more emotes to animate, more gear that needs to be adjusted with every patch. but face options and other customization options like scars would not need the same amount of work. i think it‘s more a problem of the well-known „spaghetti“ code. i hope with time we see improvements that could ease the workload expanding the character customization

But it shouldnt be that much of work to add more face- or tail-options. I mean it seems to be easy to add new hairstyles.i do think it‘s possible we‘ll get some more character customization options with say 7.0. new races? certainly not. but new face options, beard options and other customization should be possible. yoshi p always pointed out how stressful it is to create new races because of the gear they would need to adjust, and all the different animations. more races = more emotes to animate, more gear that needs to be adjusted with every patch. but face options and other customization options like scars would not need the same amount of work. i think it‘s more a problem of the well-known „spaghetti“ code. i hope with time we see improvements that could ease the workload expanding the character customization
I guess its easy to add more options than adding a entirely new race. I demand bigger tails!

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
let‘s hope when they finish up the last races(genders), they‘ll focus on more customization options across all the races. i feel like highlander could gain so much more popularity if they could be given some attractive face options (AND EYEBROWS)
some of the older races are pretty outdated compared to the new ones. new face options for example would bring so much fresh air to older races and could raise one‘s popularity if done right.
