It's voluntary, so the system is fine. Novice network as a general chat is also fine. Most sprouts probably won't make it to the point where they are of use to a player such as me, so why invest anything in besides the bare minimum to get them through normal content?

Just going to link this as I'm sure most if not all arguments that will pop up in this thread about mentors have been covered let alone discussed to death in this other thread. Does the mentor system at least for the EU/NA side need to be fixed? Yes. How IdK as I'm sure this part of the player base will find somehow to abuse it or whatnot.

Depends on the datacenter. I have noticed that most people who have problems with Mentor system are from Aether or Crystal. On Famfrit we have mentors who help sprouts all the time in NN.

The problem is the mentor system works differently in the JP datacenters compared to NA.

And that some are for LOL or for the ultra rare mount that requires a high level of masochism.

The mentor system does not work in my opinion, the number of hours, recommendation and even finish at least once all the normal content & Ex, does not guarantee absolutely the skill of the rightful owner.

The mentor system is supposed to work according to the Japanese principle of senpai-kohai, but the mentor/novice channel is full of spam without much interest.

    So, don't expect model individuals.

There're actually a lot of questions pertaining to endgame gameplay, metas, gearing etc asked by not only returners, but other mentors as well. Extensive endgame knowledge is actually a valuable groundwork for advising newer players, because it's where their journey is ultimately headed and you can help to guide peoples path so that they're productive when they get there.

There're are a handful of mentors that go overboard and spam endgame theorycraft stuff to feed their own ego, but they're fairly rare and at the very least their information is generally accurate. The same can't be said of the weird PVE mentors that spend 10 hours a day on the game, yet never touch any hard content, and tell sprouts bizzare things like "You take more damage from behind", "Sheltron only blocks physical attacks", "Upheaval is useless outside of IR", or "Spamming emotes instead of dpsing as a healer is okay as long as you keep the party alive" (these are all real examples I've personally witnessed).

Broad experience is valuable for an educator, and imo some level of raid experience is a vital part of that tapestry for PVE mentors. Personally I'd like to see the PVE mentor requirements updated to include some reasonably outdated savage content, or clearing the EX from the previous patch.

People achieve the mentor status just to walk around and have a crown next to their name as some kind of Title but they do not help new players instead I've seen them yell at other players telling them they should have watched a video before joining the instance, to play an easier job if they can't understand how to play it, not teaching mechanics or helping new players. Many and I mean MANY of the mentors have left the instance after the second or so wipe, I've made a few videos on it.

There should be some kind of way for Mentors to lose their Mentor status for being rude, Toxic, refusing to help new players, Giving wrong advice for mechanics, Leaving the instance and such. Something that would be the opposite of commendations. There are waaaayyy to many Mentors but only a few of them actually take their Mentor status with pride and help others. I wanted to become a Mentor, I was looking forward to it but all these Mentors are giving it a bad reputation.

Please consider doing some kind of change. Increasing the things you have to do to obtain the Mentor status just makes the crown look like a shiny Title to many, and many of them do not actually wish to be actual Mentors. Mentors have been the ONLY toxic players I have come across in my entire 2 months of playing.
Looks like someone is mad they need to do extremes in party finder rather than get free carries in duty finder.

I’d suggest being grateful you managed to find mentors that suffered through a wipe or two rather than just dumping the extreme parties as soon as they zone in.

Ultimately, if you want to participate in any of the endgames (be that at 50 or 60 or 70 or 80) you need to be prepared for them. If you can’t do that or are unwilling to do that, no amount of mentor “help” is going to make your experience reliably enjoyable.

Those questions are asked, but the truth is a lot of mentors do actually have the answers and they are good enough. There have been a lot of memes lately, but a lot of them have actually done at least some savage tiers.

It's good for them to have at least stepped into extreme or savage once to understand what is different about it so they can answer questions about it, but in the novice network I think it's intentional that while one mentor might not have the answer, another will.

"You take more damage from behind", "Sheltron only blocks physical attacks"
To be fair, these things were true in Heavensward for paladins. Those mentors must have not kept up with the changes over time or taken a long break.

I have a hard time keeping a positive attitude about extreme trials when I tend to receive little to no commendations even in situations where I'm the only one who knows the fight and has to discreetly explain every mechanic, set up waymarks, and all that.

I'm not sure if they just don't know better or if they're instinctively throwing their commends at the tanks/healers, but it's frustrating regardless.

A lot of actual PvE mentors have just given up and turned off the crowns. I'll still lurk in NN to answer questions, but out in the open world, I don't need to show off the crown to help people, especially if it gives people a prejudiced view of me before I even type a single sentence.

I guess that is to say - you probably have met more mentors than you realize.

    I'm currently at 401 / 2000 roulette clears.

I cannot believe that 90% of mentor are bad, I've seen a few early deserters, but nothing toxic.

So far I only remember of 1 mentor performing really bad during Shiva Ex, and I notice them mentor cuz they allow me to evaluate how easily this fight can go.

I usually have a good experiences even in EX fight, I've notice that I can do most of them now under 20 minutes.

I went ahead and prepared macros with mechanics in bullet point explanations for the harder ex fights and it usually goes well.

Of course the occasional ramuh ex fight goes south but we usually pull tru quick enough when people cooperate.

I do leave the praetorium when it pop, because I can't do that dungeon 4 times a night and be happy.
