System Rebooting with DX11 enabled (endwalker benchmark causes reboot also)

I am running a fairly new machine with an i9-9900K and a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 with dual Dell monitors. Everything stock, nothing over clocked. I can run many other games, WoW, Overwatch, EQ, SWTOR/etc and not have the issue.

When I start up FF14 it is fine in character select but once I get into the game and get off the Inn bed it immediately reboots the PC.

I am running with current windows 10 and nvidia driver patches/updates.

If I disable DX11 it works for the most part tho even then at some major cinematics it will reboot. Not using DX11 half of a solution only tho as I still am limited to some features in the game (i.e. single-bag window for example).

When running the Endwalker benchmark it reboots.

Is there anything I can provide that would help resolve this?

I opened an ticket on the support site a week ago with this same issue but have not received a human response yet. I realize that FFXIV is receiving a well deserved surge of popularity but I am curious what time frame should I expect a reply? Ticket #17280946.

    Thanks!

Hi, when a system reboots on some operations then it is usually a sign that the hardware has some issues. It can be defect memory or your PSU is too weak or something overheats etc.

    Cheers

Aye, I've seen the same mentioned via google search. However the system is brand new, is running a thermaltake 850 on a nvidia 3090. Memory and cpu tests indicate no problems.

It also runs various other games (some much more graphically intense) and do not cause any issues.

I thought maybe it was overlays from discord but that doesn't seem to be the cause either.

Is this crash a "suddenly the screen turns off and the computer reboots" thing, or do you get any pop-up crash info or BSOD with crash report info?
If its just "screen off/reboot" thing, then disable Automatic Restart in Advanced System Properties.
    1. Press Windows Key + R and type SystemPropertiesAdvanced
    2. Select Settings in the Startup and Recovery section
    3. Uncheck "Automatically restart"
    4. Click OK and close out the System Properties window, then reboot the computer

Now, if the computer crashes due to a software issue or a problem with the game or drivers, you will be able see to what has happened software wise.
If the computer however still restarts as it has been, then it is a hardware or BIOS issue

Are you running with uncapped framerates? XIV is known to have issues with high framerates. This however, with a hard reboot does present more like a hardware issue.

(edit: To add, uncapped framerates can often expose a weakness in hardware, and may or may not present in every game, or piece of software. See the recent New Worlds fiasco for a very extreme example.)

I'll give it a try when I can ... but I am pretty sure that's not an accurate determination. I mean if New World can brick a video card, apps can cause a system to reboot due to triggering something. While I realize this isn't new world but I've had this same problem with FF14 before on a completely different PC. I stopped playing around Stormblood originally because of it (at some point there was a patch around that time and it started having stability issues).

I suspect it's some application I use that ff14 conflicts with.

In the short term, I've found that if I run ff14 in full screen mode using dx11 it seems to be "stable" (not run long term testing). If I switch back to window/borderless with dx11 it reboots almost instantly.

High frame rate definitely has something to do with it (none or 144). If I turn it down to 76 it's more stable and doesn't reboot immediately with dx11 enabled. However after extended play (1-2 hours?) during some cinematics it would reboot.

There has also been some issues with a fairly recent Windows update which can cause low framerates, stuttering, and crashes on SOME systems running SOME software. There was a voluntary hotfix that has had varying amounts of success in repairing the issue. IIRC it had something to do with Game Mode (Turn this off, really seems to do more harm than good in most games), the fix is scheduled to be in the next update I think.

Hi, install KB5004296 via Windows Update. It should appear as an optional update. This update fixes several issues with gaming.

    Cheers
